Wizards Reportedly Have Offered Beal a Contract Extension

Monday, Sept. 28

Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reported Monday that Beal "will almost certainly sign a long-term contract with the Washington Wizards by next summer, though he likely won’t sign a four-year extension by the Halloween deadline," according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Beal reportedly wants a max salary, which the Wizards have yet to offer him, as they desire to have "maximum salary-cap flexibility for free agents in July."

That flexibility would allow the team to potentially sign Washington, D.C., native Kevin Durant, who is set to hit free agency after this season.

When asked if he had been offered a contract extension by the team, however, Beal took a long pause before saying, "No," according to Todd Dybas of the Washington Times

Beal, 22, has established himself as a cornerstone for the Wizards franchise and the running mate for superstar point guard John Wall. He averaged 15.3 points, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game in his third year, shooting an impressive 40.9 percent from beyond the arc. He excelled in last year's playoffs, however, averaging 23.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals in 10 games.

With other players in his draft class like Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard signing max deals, it's hardly surprising Beal would be opting for the same. While he hasn't emerged as a superstar like Davis and Lillard, he continues to grow into an excellent shooting guard and has shown solid chemistry alongside Wall, and the Wizards wisely want to keep him in Washington, D.C., for many years to come.
