Lakers' Luka Doncic Talks Potential Pursuit of Wilt Chamberlain Record Amid Historic Start to Season
Los Angles Lakers star Luka Dončić says there's a "long season" standing between him and the possibility of joining Wilt Chamberlain as the second NBA player to average 40 points per game.
"It's obviously a long season. We're just 10 games in. We've got 72 left," Dončić told reporters when asked about chasing Chamberlain's record after putting up 53 points in a Friday night win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
"As long as we'll win, I'm good. Obviously, got 'em up today, not going to lie. Hopefully it continues, but you never know."
Dončić has averaged 40.1 points per game so far this season, joining Chamberlain as the only players to remain over the 40-point plateau nine games into an NBA campaign.
Dončić won the NBA scoring race for the second time in his career with 33.5 points per game last season with the Lakers. He set a career high by posting 33.9 points per game when playing for the Dallas Mavericks in 2023-24.
He has so far averaged more points per minute than Chamberlain recorded when posting 50.4 points per game in his 1961-62 campaign.
Dončić will need to keep up the efficiency that has seen him shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from deep in order to keep up that pace down the stretch.
He and the Lakers, which are off to a Western Conference-best 8-2 start to the season, are set to return to action Sunday evening at the Detroit Pistons.
