Wemby's Historic Game Helps Spurs Beat Mavs, Box Score Stats & Highlights for Flagg, Kyrie, More

Victor Wembanyama is good at basketball.

The San Antonio Spurs star put on a show while leading his team to a dramatic 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Wednesday's Western Conference showdown at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs improved to 6-2 overall with their sixth straight win, while the Mavericks fell to 4-4 with a second consecutive loss.

Wembanyama wasted no time setting the tone with a historic first half on his way to a stunning performance of 52 points, 24 rebounds and eight blocks. Kyrie Irving did what he could for Dallas while Cooper Flagg passed Kevin Durant for points as a teenager, but it was all to no avail with the big man playing at such a level.

Irving had a chance to win it in the final seconds, but his jumper was off the mark.

Wednesday was an excellent opportunity for both teams to make an early statement. The Spurs could extend their winning streak, while the Mavericks had the chance to see how far they are from the NBA's elite with a measuring-stick game.

Elite was on full display from the start, as Wembanyama crossed up his defender in the opening minute and threw down a two-handed jam. It was a sign of what was to come, as he nearly notched a double-double in the first quarter alone.

Fittingly, he finished the quarter by getting out in transition, unleashing a quick move and slamming in another dunk. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year also swatted multiple shots and forced turnovers, allowing the Spurs to get out in transition as they built an early lead.

For as impressive as the dunks were, Wembanyama's blocks stood out even more as Dallas struggled to get anything going near the rim. He even blocked three shots in 13 seconds as the Spurs built a 17-point halftime advantage behind their star.

It was all part of one of the most impressive halves in NBA history.

The big man went into intermission with 29 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and two steals as a one-man force on both ends of the floor. While Dylan Harper provided a scoring spark as well, the story was Wembanyama's brilliance.

Dallas could have gone through the motions in the second half facing such a dominant big man, but Irving kept the visitors within striking distance with his outside shooting and offensive aggressiveness. Flagg also put a terrible shooting start behind him, while P.J. Washington provided secondary scoring.

The Spurs' answer seemingly every time the Mavericks built any momentum was to just throw the ball up and let Wembanyama tower over defenders as he finished multiple alley-oops and continued to get to the free-throw line.

And still the Mavericks wouldn't go away.

Naji Marshall was key off the bench as the visitors continued to chip away at the lead. By the time Flagg finished an and-1 on an alley-oop and Washington drilled a three, the Mavericks were suddenly up three in front of a stunned crowd.

But the Spurs had Wembanyama and they didn't.

San Antonio continued to rely on its big man in crunch time, and he responded with a game-tying three and multiple baskets around the rim. He made what proved to be the winning free throw in the final minute, which was a fitting end to such a memorable performance.
