Redick Says Lakers 'Live on a Spaceship' as Luka Doncic Makes NBA History, 'Feels Like a Supernova'
After Sunday night's 131-125 win over the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick couldn't help but revel in star guard Luka Doncic's latest history-making performance.
"It feels like a supernova, but it also feels normal," Redick said after the win, per The Athletic's Dan Woike. "We live on a spaceship, and we're going at the speed of light at all times when he's on the court."
Doncic poured in 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, five steals and a block in the victory, which improved the Lakers' record to 5-2. His two-way impact made him the first player to record at least 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals in a game.
While he's routinely faced criticism for his lapses on defense, Doncic seemed more engaged than ever against the Raptors. All 15 of his rebounds were on the defensive glass, and he also drew three charges, two of which were upheld after video reviews.
"Obviously, I'm not the best defender in the NBA, but I think this year I really took a step forward," Doncic said after the game. "Obviously, people are going to talk what they want to talk (about) me … But I know, and my team knows, that I think I'm better this year. And that helps the whole team, I think."
If Doncic remains committed to his defensive improvements, the Lakers will have a much better chance to contend for a title this year.
Los Angeles will try to keep the momentum going when it faces the Miami Heat (2-4) on Monday night.
