Wemby Reacts to Amen's Block, Says What He'd Do Differently in New Video After Spurs Lose to Rockets
Victor Wembanyama knows what he did wrong on the final offensive possession that resulted in his potential game-tying shot being blocked by Amen Thompson in the San Antonio Spurs' 114-110 loss to the Houston Rockets on Friday night.
Asked what he would have done differently during his postgame press conference (starts at :10 mark), Wembanyama said "I would have dunked the ball."
The Spurs were trailing by two with five seconds remaining and possession of the ball. Wembanyama caught a pass in the paint and made a move to the basket, but he was met in midair by Thompson, who blocked the layup attempt.
Given the size difference between the 7'4" Wembanyama and 6'7" Thompson, it was a surprise to see the Rockets forward match him when they got in the air.
Thompson had great position to keep Wembanyama from getting as close to the basket needed for an easy dunk attempt, but the Spurs star has such long arms that it wasn't impossible for him to try for a slam rather than a finger roll.
It could also be argued if Wembanyama had tried for a dunk and generated contact with Thompson, he might have been able to draw a foul to at least get two free-throw attempts that could have tied the game.
Instead, Wembanyama and the Spurs are searching for answers amid an 0-2 start to the season. This marks the first time they have lost back-to-back games in the regular season since Jan. 11-13 last season.
San Antonio will look to get in the win column for the first time in the 2026-27 season on Saturday against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.
