LeBron James Responds to President Trump's Criticism of His Routine During National Anthem
Philadelphia 76ers star LeBron James responded Thursday night to a social media post from United States President Donald Trump demanding an apology for seemingly warming up during the national anthem ahead of Tuesday night's season opener against the New York Knicks.
"Must've been a slow news day at the office," James told reporters after the Sixers claimed a 114-106 win in their home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James made his Sixers debut Tuesday on the road against the defending champion Knicks.
The NBA's all-time leading scorer could be seen miming what appeared to be golf swings and jump shots as the national anthem played at Madison Square Garden ahead of the 76ers' 106-100 win.
Trump responded with a post in which he called James a "total disgrace" who "disrespects our country."
He continued to criticize James in a Thursday night campaign rally in Sioux City, Iowa.
Sixers coach Nick Nurse said ahead of Thursday's win he saw Trump's criticism as something "that goes right in with other outside noise we've already had."
"All I really care about is getting them to the practice floor, getting them in the film room, getting them to the game floor, and the focus that they've had and the intent and all the stuff they've had has been excellent," Nurse said.
James has averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds across his first two games with the Sixers, who are looking to improve to 3-0 Saturday night against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks.
