JJ Redick Talks Lakers' 'Silly Fine' System, Reveals Luka Has Won Prize Money the Most 'By Far'
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick revealed Wednesday night that he has instituted a unique way for players to compete for prize money accumulated via fines.
Speaking to reporters after the Lakers opened their season with a 127-105 home win over the Golden State Warriors (beginning at the 17:19 mark of the video), Redick provided some insight into the competition that allows players to vie for fine money he has collected:
"We have a silly fine system, so if you're a minute late to film, you're two minutes late to the bus, $500 [of] your personal cash goes in that pot," Redick said. "We shoot for it every shootaround, and I think by far Luka [Dončić] has won the most."
The conversation came up while discussing the half-court shot Dončić made going into halftime, which extended the Lakers' lead to 66-52.
That accounted for three of Dončić's game-high 28 points in Wednesday's game, which saw Los Angeles carry a 34-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors made the score look a bit better in the fourth quarter, but it was a one-sided game that the Lakers blew open in the second and third quarters.
Playing their first regular-season game in the post-LeBron James era, the new-look Lakers did not appear to miss a beat.
Dončić, Austin Reaves and offseason acquisition Walker Kessler all scored over 20 points, and five Lakers scored in double figures overall in the victory.
The Lakers will be back in action Friday when they host the rival Los Angeles Clippers at Crypto.com Arena.
