Steve Kerr Teases Retirement Timeline, End of Warriors Dynasty with Steph Curry, Draymond Green
Steve Kerr signed a two-year extension to remain the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, but his long-term future may remain a subplot with the franchise in such a delicate position.
In an interview with The Ringer's Logan Murdock, Kerr was somewhat noncommittal about his status beyond his contract.
"I signed for two years and I can't see myself walking away after this year, but it feels now like there's some shape to this thing," he said. "There's some clarity. I could see this ending where [Stephen Curry], [Draymond Green], we all leave around the same time. I could see that happening."
Murdock responded that Kerr's remarks aren't dissimilar to what he said "two, three years ago," and he remains in the exact same place.
"I'm well aware that the NBA's crazy," Kerr said. "Anything could happen."
It's probably tough to walk away as long as Curry is a Warriors player. He and Kerr are connected in a way that few other NBA players and coaches are thanks to having worked for 13 years and won four titles together.
For Kerr, however, there's the stress that comes with trying to win a title when an organization's championship window might be closed altogether. Since its last Finals win in 2022, Golden State has twice reached the second round of the playoffs and twice missed the postseason altogether.
The Warriors' trajectory is unlikely to improve when they didn't make any big additions in the offseason, and a large part of their hopes rest on 37-year-old Jimmy Butler coming back strong from a torn ACL.
Kerr, Curry and Green all exiting the Bay Area at the same time would be fitting from a narrative perspective, but sports rarely provide for closure like that. Otherwise, Klay Thompson would still be a member of the Warriors.
Fans won't be too shocked if there's somebody different coaching the Warriors ahead of the 2028-29 season and maybe even before that.
