With Porter on his way out of Milwaukee, he'll look to join a new team before the season starts. One team in need of a guard could be the Sacramento Kings, who lost Ben Simmons to a season-ending torn Achilles on Sunday.
Porter, a first-round pick in 2019, started his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers before spending three seasons with the Houston Rockets. He started the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Clippers but was traded to the Bucks midway through the year.
Last year, Porter put up 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and a career-high 7.4 assists in 38 games with Milwaukee. A lingering right knee injury forced him to miss the majority of the season.
Despite solid numbers last season, Porter struggled during the preseason, and the team ultimately decided to waive him to meet the roster limit.
Before being waived on Monday, Porter was drawing trade interest from the Kings, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
Now a free agent, Porter could join the Kings without Sacramento having to give up any assets in a trade. With Simmons out for the year, the Kings need some backcourt depth, and Porter makes for an intriguing offer.
Sacramento will surely use first-round pick Darius Acuff Jr. as its starting point guard, but Porter could play as his backup as the young player gets acclimated to the league.
The Minnesota Timberwolves added LaMelo Ball this offseason, but they don't have much depth behind him. Second-round pick Isaiah Evans is currently set to back up Ball, and Porter would be an upgrade.
Whether Sacramento, Minnesota or elsewhere, it's hard to imagine Porter will go unsigned for very long, especially as injuries start to take a toll on teams.
