New Warriors Rumors on Brandin Podziemski Contract Talks After Steph Curry's Historic Deal
According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, Golden State Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski is one of the likely candidates for a contract extension this week, joining the likes of Brandon Miller in Charlotte, Anthony Black in Orlando) and Cason Wallace in Oklahoma City.
Per that report, "Regarding Podziemski specifically: Word relayed to The Stein Line this week is that both sides want to get a deal done... but that is obviously dependent on beating the ticking clock."
The deadline to sign rookie scale extensions is Monday, Oct. 19.
San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama, Houston's Amen Thompson, Detroit's Ausar Thompson and Utah's Keyonte George are the only players from the 2023 draft class to sign rookie-scale extensions thus far.
Podziemski, 23, averaged 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game last season across 82 appearances (43 starts), shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three. He was a different player after the All-Star break, however, averaging 17.5 points across 27 contests.
That's the version the Warriors want to see going forward.
"From talking to Steve [Kerr], talking to [general manager[ Mike [Dunleavy], end-of-season meetings, they're kinda just like, 'Do what you were doing the last six weeks,'" Podziemski told Luca Evans of the San Francisco Chronicle. "And so, I know I have confidence from them and my teammates to do the same things. And now it's about like, where are the little gaps to add a little bit more than what I was doing?"
Thus far he's had a strong training camp, with Kerr going so far as to describe it as "great" last week through the first three days.
"That's what we like about Brandin: His ability to see the game, attack angles and he understands the officiating," Kerr told reporters. "He can dribble, pass, shoot. You can put him at any spot out of a timeout. Really versatile and obviously crucial to make the whole thing go."
As for whether that translates to a lucrative extension remains to be seen.
"I mean, obviously, I would love a deal," Podz told Evans. "I think at the moment, all options are on the table. Obviously, there's been mutual interest between me and the organization, and so if we're able to get something done, that'd be beautiful. But like I said, all options are always on the table, until it's a done deal."
