LeBron James' 76ers Role, Position Teased by Nick Nurse After Opening Training Camp

The best role for LeBron James on the Philadelphia 76ers has been debated after he signed with the team this summer, though most believe he would be best-suited operating as the de facto point guard.

On Thursday, head coach Nick Nurse indicated that he expects James to primarily do so:

It makes sense on a number of fronts.

James is one of the best passers in NBA history and a brilliant basketball mind, often operating as a point forward and coach out on the court. He's also 41 and took a step back from being a primary scoring threat with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, letting Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves take on a heavier burden in that regard.

So operating as more of a traditional point guard would hardly be a stretch. He's already said he's willing to play whatever role is required of him:

It's also a role that the Sixers need.

While Tyrese Maxey has handled the point guard duties in recent seasons, he's really more of a combo guard better suited to being a scorer first and playmaker second. It was a role he played quite well when paired with James Harden.

Both Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe are also capable of initiating the offense, though Brown is more naturally an iso scorer and Edgecombe is a younger player still refining his game. And while Joel Embiid is a capable passer out of the post, he's certainly not going to be initiating the offense from the center position like Nikola Jokić.

It all adds up to James being the best option to serve as the primary point guard.

The entire Sixers' season boils down to how quickly this revamped roster can develop chemistry, and how much each of its stars are willing to sacrifice to make the entire operation work. If it all clicks, few teams come close to the overall talent the Sixers bring to the table. But whether it will work—and how it will work—remain question marks heading into the 2026-27 season.
