New Warriors Rumors on Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler's Contracts After Stephen Curry's Historic Deal

One Golden State Warriors star removed the questions over his short-term future, and that casts a bigger spotlight on the franchise's other two marquee names.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Stephen Curry agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension. He can opt out after the 2027-28 NBA season.

This gives general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. a better idea of the payroll with Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green on expiring deals. The Athletic's Nick Friedell reported the pair "have expressed interest in retiring with the Warriors, though doing so could require them to return on substantially smaller contracts."

Curry left some money on the table, roughly $20 million on a two-year max.

That didn't amount to a massive pay cut, though. The 12-time All-Star will make $62.6 million for the upcoming season and then average $58 million over the next two years.

Butler and Green — the former in particular — might have to sacrifice more in order to extend their time in the Bay Area.

Butler is signed for $56.8 million and has a $65.5 million cap hold for 2027-28. It's difficult to envision a scenario where the Warriors are paying him more than Curry, and his market will inevitably reflect the fact he's a 37-year-old coming off a torn ACL.

Green is likewise on the wrong end of the aging curve and has seen his skills gradually decline. He remains an effective two-way player but doesn't register the impact he did during the peak of the Warriors' dynasty.

In the case of Green, the extent of his pay cut will at least be a little less due to the fact he'll collect half ($27.7 million) of what Butler will.

Through the departure of Klay Thompson in 2024, Dunleavy outlined his and the Warriors' priorities. They're desperate to win another championship with Curry, and that might mean parting ways with key stars who helped deliver a lot of success.

When the time comes to seriously negotiate extensions with Butler and Green, the front office will have a clear limit to how much it's willing to spend. If the two veterans want to maximize what earning power they still have, that could mean putting on a different uniform in 2027.
