New Kyrie Irving Trade Rumors Update Buzz on Mavs Star Ahead of 2026-27 NBA Season

Kyrie Irving's future with the Dallas Mavericks could become a major talking point during the upcoming NBA season.

ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported Monday a "question that's being asked around the league" is how long the point guard will remain with the Western Conference club.

"It's not because the Mavericks don't love Kyrie," he reported. "They do. It's not because Kyrie doesn't love Dallas and hasn't enjoyed his experience there. He has. But they're building around a 19-year-old prodigy in Cooper Flagg. So could there come a time when it makes sense for both sides to find a contender for Kyrie to go to? These are the kind of things that people around the league will be monitoring leading up to the trade deadline."

Irving has just one more season remaining on his contract until his 2027-28 player option, so he may not be with the Mavericks for long even if they don't trade him.

And moving him for significant draft capital or young players could help the front office align the roster with Flagg's timeline as the franchise's building block. After all, Irving is 34 years old and may no longer be a prime contributor when the Mavericks are once again ready to realistically compete for a title.

Surrounding Flagg with players who are closer to his age to continue building toward the future may make the most sense for a team that is coming off two straight losing seasons.

As for Irving, he would be quite the trade addition for any team in need of backcourt help.

His resume includes a championship, a Rookie of the Year, three All-NBA selections and nine All-Star nods. He is widely considered one of the best ball-handlers in league history, and he can hit from the outside and facilitate for his teammates when additional defensive attention collapses on him.

Irving did miss all of last season as he recovered from a torn ACL that limited him to 50 games during the 2024-25 campaign, so potential suitors would surely want to see how he looks on the court before giving up significant assets in return.

But there could be a league-altering trade in the works by the time the deadline arrives.
