Warriors' Stephen Curry Reveals Interest-Level in LeBron James-Like Experience in NBA Free Agency

Stephen Curry says he would rather re-sign with the Golden State Warriors than follow in LeBron James' footsteps by testing free agency next spring.

Curry said Thursday on CNBC's Squawk on the Street that watching James weigh multiple free agency offers before signing with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason was "not at all" appealing to him.

"I've always stated that I want to be a lifer with Golden State," Curry said around the 4:30 mark of the video below. "What we've built there, the fact that I get to run it back this year with Draymond [Green] and Coach [Steve] Kerr.

"All the contract stuff, this NBA thing from year-to-year is so crazy. Things change really fast. But I do know my interest and mission to state in Golden State and be competitive is there, and the contract stuff will take care of itself."

Curry is currently heading into the 2026-27 season on an expiring contract that has him scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency next spring.

The Warriors star has been eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million maximum extension since Aug. 29.

Curry expressed interest in re-signing with Golden State long before then, including after his team was eliminated from the play-in tournament in April.

He told reporters in his media availability immediately following an elimination loss to the Phoenix Suns he saw himself playing several more NBA seasons and would "for sure" be interested in signing an extension with the Warriors.

When asked for an update in negotiations earlier this month on the Dubs Talk Podcast, Curry said, "There's no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I'm pretty sure that's going to happen. The deal and contract stuff will happen in its right time."

Curry added he didn't expect contract talks would be a distraction from the Warriors' preparations for the upcoming season.

The Warriors didn't make any major changes to the roster this offseason beyond selecting forward Yaxel Lendeborg in the 2026 NBA draft.

The biggest change the Warriors are hoping to see next season will be better health. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are still recovering from season-ending injuries, while Curry himself was limited down the stretch of the 2025-26 campaign with knee issues.

There is still a chance Curry could agree to a longer-term contract before the Warriors begin their push back to postseason contention. Curry has just over a month left to finalize a potential deal before the regular season tips off Oct. 21 at the Los Angeles Lakers.
