Christian Gonzalez Contract Talks Addressed by Patriots EVP Following NFL Rumors over Kraft's Remark

New England Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf provided an update on contract talks between the team and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez on Saturday.

During halftime of the Patriots' preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles (h/t ESPN's Mike Reiss), Wolf addressed the situation, saying, "Each side is trying to do what's right for them. Christian is a tremendous player that we've been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn't changed. We're going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done."

Wolf's comments came on the heels of ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reporting last Sunday on SportsCenter that Gonzalez was not thrilled with Patriots owner Robert Kraft publicly saying that the organization made him an offer to be the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

"With the Patriots and Gonzalez, not as much optimism [as the Seattle Seahawks and cornerback Devon Witherspoon], hasn't been as smooth as a negotiation," Fowler said. "Robert Kraft, the owner, had said publicly, 'Hey, we offered him to make him the highest-paid corner in the league; he didn't take it.' I don't sense Gonzalez loved that all that much. So, there's been some back and forth. At least the Witherspoon deal creates some urgency where they can now get this done; they have a benchmark to top."

Given that Witherspoon recently signed a four-year, $132 million extension with the Seahawks that will pay him $33 million per year, Fowler speculated that negotiations between Gonzalez and the Pats should start at around $35 million per year.

Selected 17th overall in the 2023 NFL draft out of Oregon, Gonzalez has posted back-to-back strong campaigns after an injury limited him to just four games as a rookie.

In 2024, Gonzalez recorded 59 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defended en route to being named a Second Team All-Pro.

Gonzalez did not have a pick last season, but he did finish with 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups, resulting in his first career Pro Bowl selection.

Most notably, Gonzalez had the interception against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game that sealed the deal and punched New England's ticket to the Super Bowl.

Per Reiss, Gonzalez has not practiced since taking a hard fall in the end zone on Aug. 10, leading to speculation that his absence has been at least partially influenced by his contract situation.

Gonzalez is under team control for two more years, as the Patriots exercised the fifth-year option in his rookie contract for 2027, but it is clear that Gonzalez and his camp are pushing for a long-term deal before the start of the 2026 regular season.
