NBA MLK 2027 Schedule for LeBron's 76ers, Brunson's Knicks, KD's Rockets and Every Game Released

The 2026-27 NBA schedule release continued on Wednesday with the league dropping information on an NBC Sports quartet of games that will take place on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 18).

This should be an interesting season to say the least. Here's a look at a few storylines that will be prominently featured on the national TV schedule throughout the upcoming campaign.

Knicks Look To Repeat

The New York Knicks won their first championship in 53 seasons after authoring a tremendous postseason run capped by a dramatic five-game NBA Finals series win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Now the Knicks are tasked with defending their title. They have the benefit of returning their entire starting lineup, led by NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson. He's flanked by Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.

New York did have a few losses to their bench this year, namely big man Mitchell Robinson. His energy, rebounding and defensive skills will sorely be missed.

The Knicks did retain much of their reserves, though, including guards Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet, both of whom played key roles in the playoffs.

New York is must-see television in 2026-27 as it hopes to go back-to-back, so it's no surprise the champions are prominently featured on ESPN and NBC this year.

Massive Offseason Moves

It seems that every offseason features big names going to new places, creating great intrigue when the schedule drops each offseason.

However, this year saw some seismic transactions, with four standing out above the rest.

The Philadelphia 76ers added Jaylen Brown via trade and LeBron James via free agency.

Giannis Antetokounmpo's 13-year tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks ended, and he's partnered with Bam Adebayo to create a dynamic duo in Miami.

LaMelo Ball is now with the Minnesota Timberwolves as they hope to finally break through to the NBA Finals after reaching the 2024 and 2025 Western Conference Finals and the 2026 semifinals.

Fans obviously want to see how those teams fare as they undergo huge shakeups in search of championships.

East Teams Looking to Rebound

Three Eastern Conference teams enjoyed great success last season only to see their campaigns end in brutal fashion. How will they respond?

The Detroit Pistons, who went 14-68 in 2023-24, continued their unbelievable ascent and went 60-22 last season. That was good enough for first place in the Eastern Conference standings. Cade Cunningham led the way after a tremendous season that even had him in the MVP conversation.

However, the playoffs were rough. The Pistons snuck by the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic in seven games and then fell to the No. 4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers in the semifinals in seven games.

The Boston Celtics were the second seed after a 56-26 season. They got that far despite missing Jayson Tatum for nearly all of the year after he suffered a torn Achilles in May 2025. However, they were one-and-done in the playoffs, falling to the 76ers in seven first-round games.

The 52-win Cavs beat the No. 5 seed Toronto Raptors in seven first-round games and then upset the Pistons in the semifinals. They held a 22-point fourth-quarter lead over the Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals but blew that advantage and ultimately lost by 11 in overtime. The Cavs lost in a four-game sweep.

All three teams have the talent in place to regroup and make deep playoff runs, even if the Knicks and 76ers appear, on paper, to be the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. That even goes for the Celtics despite losing Brown, as they'll bring Tatum back and have talent around him (Derrick White, Paul George, Payton Pritchard, etc.) to make it work.

The question is how they'll all respond after getting knocked down.

Wild West Competition

The Oklahoma City Thunder long appeared to be the NBA's best team this season. The then-defending NBA champions won a league-high 64 games and cruised through the first two rounds of the playoffs by sweeping the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. However, the 62-win San Antonio Spurs proved to be a formidable challenge and beat the Thunder.

Granted, OKC was without Jalen Williams, who endured an injury-riddled season, but the Spurs showed they had arrived.

Those two teams, obviously, stand head and shoulders above the rest of the league. The Thunder retain their talent from last year, led by back-to-back NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The same goes for the Spurs, with potential future MVP Victor Wembanyama leading the way.

Those two young rosters are the clear Western Conference favorites, but other teams will have their say. The Timberwolves are an interesting team to watch after adding Ball to the mix. The Houston Rockets are still a young squad as well with rising and improving talent (e.g. Amen Thompson, Alperen Şengün) and a 16-time All-Star leading the way in Kevin Durant.

The Denver Nuggets are led by arguably the greatest player in the league, three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić. The Los Angeles Lakers took a hit with LeBron James leaving, but they enjoy the healthy return of superstar Luka Doncic, who missed the end of last year with a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

Other questions that loom are whether the veteran-laden Golden State Warriors have one more run in them, and whether the Portland Trail Blazers can make a run featuring a new backcourt of Ja Morant and Damian Lillard.

Ultimately, the Western Conference should be a gauntlet, which seems to be the case more often than not.
