New NBA Rumors on Potential Jalen Duren Trade Amid Pistons Contract Talks in Free Agency

As the contract standoff continues between the Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren, new reports suggest the Eastern Conference team isn't particularly interested in sending the big man out with a sign-and-trade.

"I don't think a sign-and-trade is really on the table for Jalen Duren," ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Thursday on his Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast (48-minute mark). "At least I haven't heard anything like that."

ESPN's Anthony Slater joined Windhorst and added, "Detroit has nixed that idea completely. The [Sacramento] Kings would have and would remain interested in Jalen Duren in a sign-and-trade scenario."

That is notable since Windhorst pointed out "a number of teams" would be interested if the Pistons changed their mind about that approach.

This comes after NBA insider Marc Stein reported last month that Duren was "weighing the unappealing prospect" of playing the 2026-27 campaign on the $9.6 million qualifying offer. Doing so would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

On the one hand, that could be an ideal scenario for the Pistons because they would keep Duren and not have to pay him a significant amount of money during the upcoming season. However, they would then risk losing him without getting anything in return the following offseason.

A sign-and-trade would at least give them a chance to get a return package.

Duren is just 22 years old and was an All-Star and All-NBA Third Team selection last season. At first glance, it would make plenty of sense for a contender like Detroit to keep someone like that with a long-term deal.

However, he also struggled mightily during the team's second-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. His performance underscored many of the concerns about his game, including the lack of an outside shot and a tendency to disappear for stretches on the offensive end.

His averages of 9.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game in the series stood in stark contrast to his double-double average of 19.5 points and 10.5 boards a night in the regular season.

As a result, both sides still seem to be weighing their options without a resolution in place late in the offseason.
