JR Smith Makes APGA Tour Debut at Michael Eaves Classic, Former NBA Star's Scorecard After Round 1

JR Smith probably wasn't thrilled with his opening-round performance at the Michael Eaves Classic and Celebrity Pro-Am at TPC Louisiana on Tuesday, but he still flashed some impressive moments for a former NBA player competing in a notable golf tournament.

Smith shot a nine-over 81, which placed him in a tie for 43rd in the 46-person field.

Still, the retired basketball player notched a birdie and 10 pars in his debut round in the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA). If he can build on those impressive moments and find more consistency, it is not a stretch to suggest there will be quick improvement.

While Smith is best known for his basketball accolades, he is no stranger to the golf course.

In fact, he walked on to the North Carolina A&T men's golf team in 2021 and just graduated from the school with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies this spring.

Since Smith is playing as an amateur, he will not be eligible for any prize money from the $25,000 purse. A total of $8,000 goes to the winner.

As for his basketball career, Smith won two championships and the 2012-13 Sixth Man of the Year Award as someone who was known for his shooting stroke and ability to provide an offensive spark for stretches.

But he is focused on golf now and will look to turn in a better score in the second round.
