LeBron Questioned, 76ers Called 'Desperate' by Rival NBA Exec After Surprise Decision in Free Agency

The Philadelphia 76ers have positioned themselves as championship contenders after signing star forward LeBron James and acquiring star guard Jaylen Brown.

However, it seems like not everyone is convinced that those moves will bring an NBA title to Philadelphia.

"I can totally see why they did it," one Eastern Conference executive told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne of the Sixers' moves to acquire Brown and James. "They're desperate. They needed to do something else before they get through to the next thing. So getting Jaylen for what they got him for is a good risk. Getting LeBron on a minimum is outstanding. What I'm not sure is why [James] did it. You've got a lot of guys who want the ball in their hands. Who's setting screens? Who's doing the dirty work? Who's defending? A lot of that is going to fall to LeBron, I think."

The Sixers made an early splash when they sent veteran wing Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks to the Boston Celtics to acquire Brown, who is coming off a career year. Philadelphia then landed the biggest prize of the offseason when James announced this past Friday that he would spend his 24th NBA season in the City of Brotherly Love.

James' agent, Rich Paul, confirmed on his Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman that the Sixers' acquisition of Brown made them the top option over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors.

"Ultimately, Philadelphia makes a move and then boom! Now you got Jaylen Brown," Paul said, per ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "Now hold on, wait a minute now. This looks a lot different."

By adding James and Brown to a core that includes point guard Tyrese Maxey, wing VJ Edgecombe and center Joel Embiid, the Sixers have one of the most talented starting lineups in the league. Their busy offseason has led to increased expectations entering the 2026-27 campaign.

"The Process is over," one NBA coach told Shelburne. "This needs to be the product. They need to finish this thing. The Sixers have done this for a long time with Embiid and it's go time."
