76ers' Updated Roster, Salary Cap After LeBron James Signs Contract in NBA Free Agency

The saga is finally over.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Friday that LeBron James will sign a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Colleague Bobby Marks provided an annual breakdown:

Adding James to the mix will bump fellow free-agent signing Dean Wade to the second unit. The 22-time All-Star will be the starting power forward alongside Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid in the frontcourt.

James' contract represents a massive pay cut from the $52.7 million he earned in 2025-26. He'll be the eighth-highest-paid player in Philly. Here's the 76ers' full payroll for the upcoming year:

Throughout the process, ESPN's Brian Windhorst said James would make a decision based on his "happiness" from a personal and basketball standpoint. He wouldn't chase the biggest contract or the easiest path to a title.

By signing with the Sixers, LeBron followed through.

Philadelphia undoubtedly gives him a strong shot at winning a fifth championship, but he's not simply piggybacking on a team that already reached the NBA mountaintop.

James' fit on the 76ers is also cleaner than it would've been with the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat.

The Cavs would've had a difficult time balancing the need for LeBron, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden to operate on the ball, assuming Harden's return would've followed James' arrival. The Heat, meanwhile, are already orienting their offense around two stars, Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who are at their best when they're attacking the basket.

Philly undoubtedly faces some challenges with James, Brown, Embiid and Tyrese Maxey all on the same roster. VJ Edgecombe may want a larger role as well after his strong rookie season.

The problem solves itself somewhat since Embiid is guaranteed to miss a chunk of games, and James will inevitably get rested, too. This might also create a situation where the two can lighten their workloads in the regular season, and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Nothing is guaranteed in terms of future success. Still, the general perception of the 76ers has shifted dramatically between the end of their 2026 playoff run and now.
