D'Angelo Russell, Grizzlies Expected to Part Ways After 6-Team Trade in Latest NBA Rumors

D'Angelo Russell's time with the Memphis Grizzlies could be over just a few weeks after he was traded.

Per Yahoo Sports' Kelly Iko, the two sides are "expected to work towards parting ways" this offseason through either a trade or a contract buyout. The Grizzlies acquired Russell via a six-team trade on July 8.

The six-team, 11-player trade centered around Kris Middleton sent Russell from the Washington Wizards to Memphis.

He started the 2025 campaign with the Dallas Mavericks, where he put up 10.2 points and 4.0 assists per game in 26 contests before being traded to the Wizards in February. Russell did not play any games in Washington.

The Mavs signed Russell last offseason, and it was presumed that he'd be a primary option in the backcourt with Kyrie Irving out for the year with a torn ACL, but he mostly fell out of the rotation by the time he was traded as former head coach Jason Kidd turned to Ryan Nembhard and Brandon Williams.

While arriving in Memphis seemed to be an opportunity for Russell to be a veteran on a young team, the Grizzlies have different plans. The team perhaps could use Russell in the backcourt, but with 21 players on the roster, Memphis needs to free up some space without parting ways with any of its young core.

Russell will now look to find a landing spot that would give him the chance to see the court after not getting much action last season. The 30-year-old is perhaps a bit past his prime, but he has proved to be a solid backup point guard in recent seasons and will look to do the same this year.

Whether Russell will have the chance to choose where he ends up depends on whether the Grizzlies can find a trade for him.
