Victor Wembanyama apparently hasn't forgiven Spain for eliminating his home nation of France from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

When asked Saturday at Fanatics Fest in New York whether Spain or Argentina would win the World Cup, Wembanyama answered: "I hope neither."

Spain and Argentina are set to kick off the final at MetLife Stadium Sunday at 3 p.m. ET in New Jersey.

France was eliminated from contention for the World Cup title with a 2-0 semifinal loss to Spain, then wrapped up tournament play Saturday with a 6-4 third-place playoff loss to England.

Now that Kylian Mbappé is out of the running, Wembanyama could present his nation's best hope of another World Cup win.

Wembanyama's answer came shortly after the French Basketball Federation announced he will be joining France's national basketball team in their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The San Antonio Spurs star was named Saturday to the French national team that will play two 2027 World Cup qualifying matches in August.

Wembanyama is set to join a roster also featuring the Minnesota Timberwolves' Rudy Gobert and former NBAer Evan Fournier in playing two friendlies against Serbia in mid-August.

The French team will then play a qualifying game against Slovenia in Paris before traveling to Sweden for their second qualifier of the month.

This marks the first time Wembanyama will be representing his nation since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where France made it to the gold medal game before losing to the United States.

France currently has a 5-1 record to lead Group L in their bid to win a spot in the team's bid to earn a spot in the 2027 World Cup, which is set to begin in Doha, Qatar in August 2027.
