Breaking Down Lakers' Latest News and Rumors Around NBA Free Agency and Possible Trades

As one of the most prominent teams in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers are destined to be at the center of trade and free agent discussions every offseason. This year is no different, with the league's biggest star, LeBron James, opting to leave the City of Angels to continue his career elsewhere.

Latest on Former Laker LeBron James

Sean Deveney of The Heavy reported, "[LeBron] James will tilt the odds in the East if he goes there. He won't make much of a dent if he stays in the West, though, even if he goes to Minnesota or Denver. That's why the Warriors have been pushed to trade for Anthony Davis, so that James' arrival will actually change the balance of power and not just be a nice closing story."

He added that the Wizards still do not want to trade for Davis, "despite his lengthy stay on the NBA trade rumor mill."

The Western Conference is jam-packed with NBA title contenders. Oklahoma City and San Antonio make up the top tier, but right beneath them are James' old team, the Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Denver Nuggets.

The Warriors, as they are currently constructed, are not a legitimate threat to unseat any of those teams. James signing with them may allow him to play with fellow future Hall of Famers Steph Curry and Draymond Green, as well as Jimmy Butler, but that does not translate to another NBA title.

In the Eastern Conference, it is New York and everyone else at this point. There is more room for James to be a difference maker with a squad on that side of the bracket than the one he has starred for the better part of the last decade.

With James unlikely to want to ride out the rest of his career for the sake of it, a deal with a team likely to make a splash in the postseason is more likely than the alternative.

Update on Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia

Deveney also reported, "When it comes to moving contracts, the Lakers have found teams more receptive to take on Jake LaRavia's remaining $6 million for one year than the $25 million over two years for Jarred Vanderbilt."

He added that an executive told him of Vanderbilt:

"He can still play, just not at that number. (LaRavia) is a guy who you can ride when he is hot, but it gets tough when he is not. But he is tough, he plays every game, he hustles. You'd like to see better defense but he hustles. And $6 million, most people would take what he gives you for that.

Vanderbilt played his most games since the 2021-22 season with Minnesota this past season, appearing in 65 games. Still, the big man has a long and storied history of missing games, thus hurting his overall value, especially with a contract like his.

When healthy, he elevates the team's defense, but it makes sense that the organization would look to deal him to create room and bring in other players to complement superstar Luka Doncic.

LaRavia is valuable to the team off the bench and carries a favorable contract. It would defeat the purpose to trade him, in that the cap space it frees up would be minimal and more importantly, the roster loses much-needed depth.

Interest in Matisse Thybulle

Speaking of improving defense, Marc Stein reported, "The Lakers have again broadened their search for perimeter defense, league sources say, registering interest this week in free agent Matisse Thybulle."

He added, "They have already added Ziaire Williams while also continuing to pursue Jonathan Kuminga."

In 30 games with the Portland Trailblazers, Thybulle averaged 5.8 points, two rebounds, 0.5 blocks, and two steals in just over 16 minutes per outing last season.

Thybulle is a team-first player with decent scoring efficiency and great hustle. A great defensive player who can net steals, he would be a strong addition to a Lakers team that must get more dynamic defensively.

Of course, Thybulle has a history of missing games, having played in just 60-plus games once since the 2022-23 season. If he can give the Lakers enough evidence that he is healthy and ready to go, he is a worthwhile addition who would benefit an area of need for the organization.
