Juan Soto Injured, Latest Updates on Mets Star After Exiting vs. Phillies
New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto departed his team's 4-1 road win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday evening in the eighth inning with left calf soreness, per interim manager Andy Green.
Soto, who strained his right calf earlier this year and missed 15 games, is hitting .292 (.975 OPS) with 21 home runs and 51 RBI.
He got on base all four times Thursday thanks to a single and three walks. Tyrone Taylor replaced him in the lineup.
Soto has been a shining light in an otherwise morose Mets season. New York sits last in the National League East with a 41-57 record despite sporting MLB's second-highest payroll. They are 11.5 games behind the Miami Marlins for the third and final National League Wild Card playoff spot.
Now it appears the Mets will be sellers in advance of the MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3, per SNY's Chelsea Janes, with only a few players serving as untouchable targets.
"But as the second half begins Thursday night, it seems the time has come: A rival executive said the Mets informed their team that the sale is on, and that everyone but young stars Carson Benge, A.J. Ewing, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean and the obvious, Juan Soto, is available. That doesn't mean everyone will go. But it means the Mets will listen on just about everyone, which is in keeping with what people familiar with their thinking have signaled for weeks."
In the meantime, the Mets move forward with the second half of their season. Although the season already seems lost at this point, New York certainly wouldn't want to see its superstar out for any period of time. Thankfully, it appears he may not miss any games at all.
An off day on Friday helps matters as Soto gets a chance to rest before the Mets play Philadelphia again on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
