Andy Pettitte's Son Luke Picked by Yankees in 2026 MLB Draft, Full Scouting Report on 2-Way Player
Andy Pettitte became one of the critical players for the New York Yankees during their dynastic run in the late-1990s, so they are hoping history repeats itself after drafting his son in 2026.
The Yankees took Luke Pettitte, a two-way player at Dallas Baptist University, in the eighth round of the 2026 MLB draft on Sunday.
Pettitte's best path to reaching the big leagues is on the mound, but his success as a hitter this season has at least opened up the possibility that he could be useful with the bat in pro ball.
Pettitte was drafted as a two-way player, though he hasn't pitched since the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery. He responded by having a strong .337/.403/.693 slash line and 16 homers in 42 games with the Patriots this season.
Per Baseball America's scouting report (h/t Jake Devin of Pinstripe Alley), Pettitte works with a fastball that sits in the 90-93 mph range, "a high-usage mid-80s slider, a mid-80s changeup, and a mid-70s curveball."
The results for Pettitte on the mound in college were concerning, looking ahead to pro ball, though it's hard to know how much he was impacted by the elbow injury prior to having surgery.
Pettitte had a 4.17 ERA in 11 appearances as a freshman, then didn't allow an earned run in 11.1 innings in 2025 before being shut down.
The Yankees drafting Luke comes 36 years after Andy was a 22nd-round pick by the club.
Andy spent four full seasons in the minors before making his MLB debut in April 1995. He played 15 years with the Yankees across two stints, winning five World Series titles and making three All-Star appearances.
