Willson Contreras Injured, Latest Updates on Red Sox Star's Status After Accepting MLB HR Derby Bid
Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras left Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox after fouling a ball off his foot.
That puts his status for both the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby up in the air.
Contreras, 34, is having a career year at the plate, hitting .287 with 20 homers, 61 RBI, 46 runs and a .926 OPS. He's just four homers off matching his career high, and we're only in July, and his current OPS would easily be the best of his career (previous high was .888 in the 2019 season).
He's already a three-time All-Star in his career, so potentially missing out on a fourth appearance may not be the biggest deal to him. But he was set to participate in the Home Run Derby for the first time in his career.
"They asked me if I was willing to participate, and it's something that I always wanted to do," he said after he was announced as a participant. "I've done it before in Venezuela [in the winter]. And I always wanted to at least participate in one in MLB, and I'm really excited to get the opportunity. I'm looking forward to having fun and hopefully putting on a good show."
Contreras was planning to compete for the title, but not at the expense of enjoying the experience.
"Everybody that's going to compete, they're trying to win," he said. "My mindset is trying to win, but if it doesn't happen, at least I'm going to have fun. That's my take, but I'm super excited, a little bit nervous, I won't lie, but I think it's going to be fun."
Now, unfortunately, his status for the event is unclear.
