Steph Curry Addresses LeBron James Rumors Amid Warriors Buzz in NBA Free Agency

Scott PolacekJul 8, 2026

Stephen Curry wants to play golf with LeBron James.

Oh, and he wouldn't mind teaming up with him on the basketball court either.

"I'd say more so I'm interested to just play golf with LeBron," Curry said Wednesday during an interview at the American Century Championship golf tournament. "We'll handle the basketball stuff, but I want to see the golf LeBron free agent. He's out here really grinding on the game. But I'm sure we obviously would love to play together. I mean, hopefully it happens. But he's deserved the opportunity and the right to take his time with the decision."

There has been no shortage of rumblings about James possibly joining Curry on the Golden State Warriors ever since the King told the Los Angeles Lakers he will not be returning.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported last month that one reason Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option for next season was so the team had additional flexibility to pursue James. Charania also reported Thursday the Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat "stand out" among the potential suitors.

Yet in a follow up Tuesday, he reported the Philadelphia 76ers had joined the Cavaliers and Heat as teams standing out.

James won championships in the past with both Miami and Cleveland. He is also from Ohio, and returning to the team he started his career with would be a fitting and full-circle way to end his career.

However, he is surely intrigued by the possibility of playing alongside Curry and has said he'd like the chance to do so in the past. The gravitational pull from being on the court with arguably the greatest shooter in NBA history would create plenty of driving lanes that James could exploit even at this stage of his career.

It seems like Golden State would love to make that happen in 2026-27.

"Warriors sources continue to express a low level of optimism that James will ultimately pick them as his next team, but they intend to keep roster space open for James until he ultimately declares his choice," ESPN's Anthony Slater reported Tuesday.

On paper, the Warriors would likely still be looking up at the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference even with the addition of James. Still, it would be quite the development for NBA fans to watch the two players who have defined a generation in the league teaming up in the latter stages of their careers.

Curry's latest comments indicated he would be more than up for that.
