New Lakers Rumors Update Jonathan Kuminga Contract Offer, Team's Pitch to Play Alongside Luka Doncic

Andrew PetersJul 7, 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers have already put together an interesting offseason, but they're reportedly eyeing even more talent.

Per ESPN's Anthony Slater, the team continues to "actively pursue" free agent wing Jonathan Kuminga, though "they have not yet given him an enticing enough offer to commit."

According to Slater, general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach JJ Redick met with Kuminga and pitched him a starting role alongside Luka Doncic. Several members and players of the organization have also reached out to Kuminga about joining the Lakers.

But the Lakers aren't the only team pursuing Kuminga.

Slater noted that "there's also a world" in which Kuminga returns to the Atlanta Hawks, who recently declined his $24.3 million team option to make him a free agent. Should Kuminga return to Atlanta, it would likely be on a team-friendly deal.

Slater added that the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the mix for Kuminga, though their main priority at the moment is trying to lure LeBron James back to Ohio.

The Sacramento Kings were interested in Kuminga last offseason when he was a restricted free agent, and Slater reported that their interest remains, though landing him would likely require a sign-and-trade given the team's cap limitations.

Slater added that the Kings have been "hesitant" to take that avenue so far this offseason.

Kuminga played well off the bench in Atlanta, putting up 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 16 contests. He also averaged 13.7 points per game off the bench in the first round against the New York Knicks.

The Lakers have done well building a roster around Doncic, adding big man Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili.

Still, Los Angeles could use another key signing or two to ensure Doncic and Austin Reaves have enough help as they look to keep the Lakers relevant following LeBron James' departure.

Picking up Kuminga could be the missing piece this offseason.
