Djokovic Beats Auger-Aliassime in Historic Match, Updated Wimbledon Men's Tennis Bracket, Results

Timothy RappJul 7, 2026

Well that was one hell of a tennis match.

No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic bested No. 3 Felix Auger-Aliassime in a five-set match for the ages, 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4).

The match lasted five hours and 15 minutes.

Djokovic survived a marathon first set, winning a 12-10 tiebreaker, though Auger-Aliassime was not deterred, claiming the second. Auger-Aliassime's resilience was impressive, responding to a third-set loss by winning a 7-4 tiebreaker in the fourth.

It was only fitting, then, that the final set would result in a third tiebreaker, this time for the match. Neither one of these men had any intention of losing, and it's frankly a shame that Auger-Aliassime ultimately did.

But Djokovic's resolve and unbreakable spirit has always been one of the calling cards of his career. Boy did he call on that Tuesday.

The 39-year-old came into Wimbledon seeking his eighth title at the All England Club but his first since 2022. His last Grand Slam title came at the 2023 U.S. Open, his record-setting 24th major title.

His 106th win at Wimbledon, coming against Roman Safiullin in the Round of 16, set the record for most match wins at the tournament, surpassing Roger Federer.

Not that Djokovic cared.

"Not on my priority list," he told reporters. "Didn't even know about it until after the last match win ... That's really quite insignificant to me at the moment."

Now he's onto 107 wins. He probably cares little for that, too.

Of greater significance is that since Djokovic's three Grand Slam titles in 2023, a new generation of stars has overtaken the sport. Carlos Alcaraz has won five of the last 10 majors, Jannik Sinner has claimed four and Alexander Zverev just won the French Open.

Both Sinner and Zverev remain in the mix at Wimbledon, with Sinner set to take on Djokovicin the semifinals. Zverev will face American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Alcaraz is currently recovering from a right wrist injury and hasn't played since the Barcelona Open in April.

Sinner holds a 6-5 edge over Djokovic all-time, though the latter broke a five-match losing streak to his younger counterpart at this year's Australian Open, knocking him out in the semifinals. Now they'll face off again, this time with a spot in the Wimbledon final on the line.

The old guard vs. the new. Sometimes the storylines write themselves. But first, Djokovic probably needs a good and long night's sleep.
