Fans pick the All-Star Game starters via two voting phases. The first voting phase determines the two finalists for each position. The second voting phase then decides the game's starter.
However, one position from each league is exempt from the second voting phase. The league's leading vote-getter in the first phase automatically starts in the All-Star Game. This year, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Ernie Clement and Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani earned those honors.
The remaining All-Star Game spots were decided by player ballots and the Commissioner's Office.
The players decide eight pitchers (five starters and three relievers) and nine backups (one for each position).
The Commissioner's office then picks six more players for each league (four pitchers and two position players) and also make sure all 30 MLB clubs are represented in the Midsummer Classic.
A few of these picks are no surprise.
Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, the clear favorite for the American League MVP award, is the AL's starter at designated hitter. Entering Saturday, Alvarez was hitting .319 for 27 home runs and 61 RBI. His 27 homers (and 101 hits) led the American League, and his 1,055 OPS paced the major leagues.
Ohtani, the clear favorite to win the National League MVP for the third straight season (and the MVP for the fifth time overall) is back in the All-Star Game once again. Entering Saturday, Ohtani was hitting .288 (.927 OPS) with 18 home runs and 50 RBI. However, he's been fantastic on the mound as well, going 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA (0.95 WHIP) and 95 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber would certainly be the NL's starting DH if not for Ohtani, but he's been sensational nonetheless and will be in the game. Schwarber is leading the majors with 30 home runs, one year after his 56 homers paced MLB.
Speaking of home runs, Tampa Bay Rays superstar third baseman Junior Caminero is back in the All-Star Game. Caminero had 45 home runs and 110 RBI last year, and he's followed that up with 25 homers and 55 RBI this year with a .288 batting average and .934 OPS. Over a 10-game stretch from June 23-July 3, Caminero hit 10 home runs with 21 RBI.
On the mound, Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski and New York Yankees ace Cam Schlitter lead the way.
Misiorowski's 1.47 ERA, 156 strikeouts (in just 104.0 innings) and 0.78 WHIP all lead the major leagues. He's struck out 10 or more batters in seven of his 17 starts.
Schlitter's 3.4 WAR and 2.08 ERA lead the American League. He's struck out 123 batters along the way, and the Yankees have gone 12-6 in his starts.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and Blue Jays skipper John Schneider will lead the NL and AL teams, respectively, after guiding their squads to the World Series last year.
