What LeBron Did After Making Lakers, NBA Free-Agency Decision Revealed in New Report from Shams

Doric SamJul 2, 2026

After informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to continue his legendary NBA career with a new team next season, star forward LeBron James continued to enjoy his leisure time.

During Thursday's episode of Get Up, ESPN's Shams Charania revealed what James did after deciding on his future earlier this week.

"After LeBron James' decision to leave the Lakers on Tuesday, he returned back to the golf course," Charania reported. "So, clearly LeBron James is not in a rush right now to make a decision. He's evaluating everything, but his biggest priority in all of this is finding a team where he feels like he's going to have a chance to play meaningful basketball, compete for a championship."

LeBron Open to Every Team

James spent eight seasons with the Lakers and helped lead them to an NBA championship in 2020. He posted a message of gratitude to the team after his departure was announced.

At 41 years old, James' priority in finding his next franchise will be to win a fifth career championship ring. Charania reported that suitors have already emerged as potential destinations as he explores free agency this summer.

"My understanding is this will not be a financially-driven money decision, and so his agent Rich Paul has been getting about a dozen pitches ever since free agency opened at 6 p.m. ET on [Tuesday]," Charania said. "But when I talk to teams around the league, three stand out during this process: the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat."

James starred for the Cavs and Heat and led both franchises to NBA titles. While the Warriors were once one of his biggest rivals, many around the league have dreamt about seeing him paired with star point guard Stephen Curry.

Whatever James decides, it sounds like he won't rush anything as he evaluates his options.

"So, LeBron James will take probably the next few days to sift through all of that, figure out exactly where he's at. There is no timetable," Charania said. "I will say, though, I have listened to Rich Paul on his own podcast on Game Over, and he's given hints along the way this year about how the Lakers' situation was looking. I do have a hunch that we might get some more hints along the way here in the next few days."
