5 Sneaky Landing Spots for LeBron James In 2026 NBA Free Agency

Greg SwartzJul 2, 2026

As you may have heard, LeBron James is a free agent and looking for a home outside of Los Angeles. At least, not with the Lakers.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors are the leaders to sign the four-time MVP. The Denver Nuggets have expressed interest as well.

What if James shocked us all and chose a team no one saw coming? After all, the 41-year-old did give these directions to his agent, Rich Paul:

What if James didn't go home to Cleveland, returned to Miami or teamed up with Stephen Curry by the bay?

The following five sneaky landing spots could actually make sense for a final chapter.

Los Angeles Clippers

The easiest move for LeBron James is to stay in Los Angeles and sign with the Clippers, a team that needs a new alpha.

Kawhi Leonard is gone, but there's a lot of talent left on this roster.

Darius Garland is a fellow Klutch client and two-time All-Star point guard. He's averaged 20.5 and 7.3 assists over the past five years while shooting 39.3 percent from three. James took Garland early as an All-Star reserve pick for his team when Cleveland hosted the game in 2022.

Brandon Ingram played with James as a young forward with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018-19 and has gone on to make a pair of All-Star games as well, putting up 22.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists in the seven years post-LeBron.

Brook Lopez is still a productive 3-and-D center, Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn are excellent defenders and No. 5 overall pick Keaton Wagler has star potential.

Let's not forget the Clippers head coach, either.

Tyronn Lue and James won a title together with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and an Olympic gold medal in 2024. He could certainly put on a good recruiting pitch as well.

Houston Rockets

With so much talk of LeBron James possibly joining friends with the Golden State Warriors, what about another future Hall-of-Famer and Olympic teammate?

James and Kevin Durant together would still be an incredibly tough duo to defend, as the latter was an All-Star and made the All-NBA second team this past season while averaging 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and shooting 41.3 percent from three.

"He's just out of this world talent," James said about Durant during the 2024 Olympics when they won gold together. "I think he even goes even harder in practice, and when the game starts, it's just routine for him."

The Rockets are also loaded with up-and-coming talent.

Amen Thompson will make sure James rarely has to guard the opponent's best player and is one of the greatest and most versatile defenders in the NBA today. Alperen Şengün, 23, is coming off back-to-back All-Star seasons and Jabari Smith Jr. continues to grow into a two-way force with his size and athleticism.

Fred VanVleet is back from a torn ACL and Houston added Marcus Smart, James' teammate last year with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Playing with Durant on a super-talented roster in a state with no income tax should certainly appeal to James.

Utah Jazz

Los Angeles Lakers v Memphis Grizzlies

It won't be long until the Utah Jazz join the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs at the top of the West. Seriously.

This team is loaded with young talent, is stocked with future first-round picks and has some current stars in Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen. This is very much a franchise to buy stock in right now.

LeBron James could ride the wave, giving this team the leadership it needs to make a jump from the lottery to making a deep playoff run. We just saw the Spurs go from 34 wins to the Finals, why couldn't the Jazz make a similar leap after adding James, Jackson and No. 2 overall pick Darryn Peterson?

Peterson will be a rookie, but we just saw a first-year guard make a huge impact on the biggest stage with Dylan Harper in San Antonio. The moment won't be too big for him.

Jackson, 26, is a former Defensive Player of the Year and two-time All-Star. He'd provide the backline defense James would require and is a good floor-spacer on offense as well.

Markkanen averaged 26.7 points per game and Keyonte George had his breakout season, putting up 23.6 points and 6.1 assists per contest. Ace Bailey looked like a future star.

Utah has enough young talent and future first-round picks (thanks, Lakers!) to bring in another star if they wanted to.

If James wants to surpass Michael Jordan as the greatest player of all time, winning a championship with the franchise that Jordan famously took down twice in the Finals would go a long way.

New Starting 5: PG Keyonte George, SG Darryn Peterson, SF LeBron James, PF Lauri Markkanen, C Jaren Jackson Jr.

Portland Trail Blazers

Los Angeles Lakers v Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers look very different than they did just a few days ago.

Buying low on Ja Morant could turn out to be a huge win over time, although the two-time All-Star doesn't look like the cleanest fit right now with so many guards in Portland. He and Damian Lillard are a small backcourt, yet Morant's attack-based game would look really nice alongside Lillard's three-point shooting.

A forward combo of LeBron James and Deni Avdija would be one of the best in the NBA, as the 25-year-old just made his first All-Star team after averaging 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists. He plays very similarly to a young James with his size (6'8", 228 pounds) and overall game.

The Blazers also have Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams III at center, who just signed a new three-year deal.

A bench starting with Jrue Holiday, Toumani Camara and Williams may be the best defensive reserve trio in the NBA, and we haven't even mentioned Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe yet. Both still carry star potential, although it's more likely they get moved in a trade for a star.

If Lillard isn't appreciated enough already, James previously vowed to change that.

Playing in Portland in the backyard of Nike's headquarters would be a nice sweetener for James to join the Trail Blazers, as he signed a lifetime deal with the company back in 2015.

New Starting 5: PG Ja Morant, SG Damian Lillard, SF LeBron James, PF Deni Avdija, C Donovan Clingan

Indiana Pacers

2024 Olympics - Men's Gold Medal Game: France v USA

Just one year ago, the Indiana Pacers were the best team in the East and were within a game of winning the NBA Finals. Signing LeBron James would certainly help them get back to this level, and beyond.

Tyrese Haliburton was an Olympic teammate of James' in 2024 and will be making his return from a torn Achilles. One of the NBA's best point guards, the 26-year-old led the NBA in assists during the 2023-24 season (10.9) and has already made multiple All-Star and All-NBA teams.

Pascal Siakam is a four-time All-Star who averaged 24.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.1 steals this past season. He and James would make a devastating forward combo.

Andrew Nembhard, Ivica Zubac, Aaron Nesmith, TJ McConnell, Obi Toppin and Jarace Walker make this one of the NBA's deepest teams and Indiana just inked Kelly Oubre Jr. to a two-year contract.

Few NBA head coaches know the league's all-time leading scorer as well as Rick Carlisle, who led the Dallas Mavericks to a championship in 2011 over James' Miami Heat while holding him to just 17.8 points per game in the series.

The Pacers have the depth, star power, defense, coaching and playoff experience to entice James all while giving him a cleaner path back to the Finals in the East.

New Starting 5: PG Tyrese Haliburton, SG Andrew Nembhard, SF LeBron James, PF Pascal Siakam, C Ivica Zubac
