Latest Lakers Rumors Leak Jalen Duren Meeting Details amid Pursuit of NBA Free Agent

Paul KasabianJul 1, 2026

The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly had a "productive meeting" with Detroit Pistons restricted free agent center Jalen Duren on Tuesday and plan to meet with him again on Wednesday, per league sources to Sam Amick of The Athletic.

"Duren was told by the Lakers in the meeting that they view him as a maximum-salary level player, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations.

"The 22-year-old received a similar message of strong interest from the Sacramento Kings, who also met with Duren on Tuesday and indicated that they will continue to explore sign-and-trade scenarios to land him."

Duren averaged 19.5 points on 65.0 percent shooting and 10.5 rebounds per game in his fourth NBA season. He made the All-Star Game for the first time and also earned a spot on the All-NBA Third Team.

He played a massive role en route to helping guide the Pistons to a 60-win season and first place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Unfortunately, the playoffs proved to be a struggle. Duren's numbers dropped to 10.2 PPG on 51.4 percent shooting and 8.5 rebounds per game.

The Pistons had trouble dispatching the No. 8 seed Orlando Magic in the first round before winning in seven games before losing to the No. 4 seed Cleveland Cavaliers in seven in the second round.

It was a tough ending to a great season for Duren, but he still has a bright future ahead of him with plenty of room for upside.

He enjoyed a fantastic breakout in year four and helped a team engineer an incredible turnaround after going 14-68 in the 2023-24 season.

Now the question is where Duren will play moving forward. The leader seems to be the Pistons, who reportedly aren't interested in sign-and-trade deals and will match any offer sheet Duren gets on the open market, per Marc J. Spears of Andscape.

Rory Maher of Hoops Rumors gave some insight into what type of contract Duren can get.

"For what it's worth, the maximum a rival team can offer Duren is approximately $177.4MM over four years. The Pistons, on the other hand, can theoretically offer Duren up to $287.1MM over five years or $221.8MM over four."

The edge seems to be with Detroit at the moment, but it's clear the Lakers have interest. L.A. has money to burn after LeBron James, who earned $52.6 million with the team last year, announced that he will head elsewhere this offseason.

The Lakers still have center Deandre Ayton for one more season after he picked up his 2026-27 option but don't have any long-term solution at the position right now.

Adding Duren would be a huge win for the Lakers as they hope to improve upon a 53-29 season that ended with a second round playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

We'll see how this develops during the week as Duren takes another meeting with the Lakers, but Detroit still has the leverage to bring him back.
