New Bulls Rumors on Jonathan Kuminga, Norman Powell, Anfernee Simons Before NBA Free Agency

Mike ChiariJun 30, 2026

The Chicago Bulls reportedly are considering multiple notable additions in free agency this offseason.

According to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Jonathan Kuminga and Norman Powell are both on the Bulls' radar as potential free-agent signings, and they are also weighing the possibility of re-signing guard Anfernee Simons.

The 23-year-old Kuminga became an unrestricted free agent on Monday when the Atlanta Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option for the 2026-27 season.

Kuminga spent parts of his first five NBA seasons with the Golden State Warriors before getting dealt to the Hawks prior to the trade deadline last season.

In 36 games split between the Warriors and Hawks, Kuminga averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. His best season remains 2023-24 when he averaged a career-high 16.1 points per game on 52.9 percent shooting to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

The Bulls are expected to have some competition when it comes to their potential pursuit of Kuminga, as Stein and Fischer reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers are a possible suitor thanks to head coach Kenny Atkinson's relationship with Kuminga dating back to his stint as an assistant coach with the Warriors.

Stein and Fischer noted that Chicago has emerged as a "strong potential landing spot" for Powell as well, dating back to the Detroit Pistons' decision to acquire Isaiah Joe in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, which perhaps takes them out of the running for Powell.

If the Bulls do sign Powell, it is expected to be a "short-term, balloon-style deal," per Stein and Fischer.

Powell, 33, spent last season with the Miami Heat after previous stints as a member of the Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers.

He averaged over 21 points per game for a second consecutive season in 2025-26, and Powell was named an All-Star for the first time in his career, as he averaged 21.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 three-pointers made, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

One might assume that the Heat would like to re-sign Powell after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, but Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported Monday that there is a "growing sense" Powell will not return to Miami.

Aside from outside additions such as Kuminga and Powell, the Bulls are reportedly also contemplating re-signing Simons, who appeared in six games for the team last season after a trade from the Boston Celtics.

Simons, 27, was once a dynamic offensive contributor with the Blazers, averaging 19.9 points per game from the 2021-22 season through the 2024-25 season.

His numbers dipped last season following a trade from Portland to the Boston Celtics and then from Boston to Chicago.

Still, Simons averaged 14.3 points, 2.7 three-pointers made, 2.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 55 games.

The Celtics and Golden State Warriors are reportedly considered to be suitors for Simons as well.

The Bulls are coming off a 31-51 campaign, and they have missed the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, and eight of the past nine.

However, there is reason for optimism thanks to a young, talented core led by Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis and 2026 No. 4 overall draft pick Caleb Wilson.

Adding another piece or two in free agency to complement that group could go a long way toward getting the Bulls back in the playoff mix after a lengthy run of futility.
