Breaking Down Pistons' NBA Title Chances Amid Jalen Duren, Kawhi Leonard Contract Rumors

Erik BeastonJun 28, 2026

The Detroit Pistons entered the NBA Playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference but were bounced from the postseason in the second round.

Their offseason has not gone any better, with contract drama involving big man Jalen Duren and a prominent star refusing to sign a long-term deal dominating headlines and threatening their NBA title chances.

Jalen Duren, the 22-year-old center who had arguably the best season of his young career, was reportedly underwhelmed by the first contract extension offer from the team and is set to explore sign-and-trade options, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.

Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype added, "With that said, the Pistons have maintained a strong desire to keep their 22-year-old, All-NBA center. Fellow All-NBA selection, Cade Cunningham, also wants Duren back, according to league sources."

Duren averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, two assists, and 0.8 steals and blocks in the regular season. He is dominant in the paint, gets boards, and can use his enormous frame to shut opponents out of the box. He is essential to what the Pistons did last season to help earn that top spot in the conference.

That he is close with Cunningham, and the team cannot afford their superstar to become disgruntled because they let his buddy and closest teammate go, only heightens the importance of getting a long-term extension done that will keep the All-NBA big man in the Motor City for the foreseeable future.

An NBA title is not in the discussion without him.

Add to the reportedly disappointing offer to Duren a report from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line that Kawhi Leonard "would not be amenable to extending his contract" with the team, thus having "quashed any Detroit pursuit of Leonard," and there is another hurdle in the organization's offseason attempts to improve into a legitimate NBA title contender.

Leonard is on the wrong side of 30 but is still an elite scorer, averaging 27.9 points per game for the Clippers in 2025-26.

While he would give the team a much-needed second scorer to go along with Cunningham, his disinterest in playing for the organization is a black eye and begs the questions: how many other stars feel the same, and how can the team get demonstrably better if it cannot convince superstars to join it?

The first step the Pistons must take toward an NBA title is getting Duren under a long-term contract. Their championship aspirations begin with keeping that one-two punch of him and Cunningham intact.

Offering underwhelming contracts and lowballing players whose on-court influence is key to your success will go a long way toward endearing Detroit to other superstar players who may not have previously been interested in playing for the team.

Everything starts with Duren and handling his situation in a way that ensures the long-term health of the organization.

Anything else, and the team will take a noticeable step back and potentially alienate Cunningham along the way.
