Naomi Osaka Injury Update, Latest on Star's Wimbledon Status, Foot Ahead of Tournament
Naomi Osaka's status for Wimbledon is up in the air after she had to retire due to a foot injury early in the second set against Karolina Muchova in the final at Bad Homburg Open on Saturday.
The Associated Press noted Osaka had to take a medical timeout in the first set, then after the first game in the second set gestured she couldn't continue and shook hands with Muchova and the umpire.
Osaka did seem to be in good spirits after the match when she made a statement to the crowd during the trophy ceremony.
The issue appeared to occur when Osaka rolled her right ankle. She was able to continue, but dropped the first set 6-1.
After a back-and-forth opening game to start the second set that Muchova ultimately won, Osaka had a brief discussion with her coach Tomasz Wiktorowski before deciding she was unable to continue.
Saturday's outcome put a damper on what had been a very encouraging tournament for Osaka. She had not dropped a set in her first four matches, defeating Elise Mertens, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Xinyu Wang to reach the final.
This was Osaka's first tournament final since the National Bank Open in August 2025. It was also her first appearance since the French Open, when she advanced to the fourth round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.
She was seeking her first tournament victory since the 2021 Australian Open.
Osaka is the No. 14 seed going into Wimbledon and is scheduled to face Elsa Jacquemot in the first round on Monday. There is no indication of her status for the event at this point.
