The 22-year-old spent two seasons with the Sycamores from 2022 to '24, leading them to a 32-7 record in his second year. Their 32 wins were the program'sย second-mostย in a season, behind only the 1978-79 team with Larry Bird that went 33-1 before losing to Michigan State in the national title game.
After head coach Josh Schertz left Indiana State to take the same job at Saint Louis in April 2024, Avila transferred to remain with him.
Saint Louis went 48-21 over the past two seasons, making the NCAA tournament this past season as a No. 9 seed before losing to eventual-national champion Michigan in the second round.
Avila was named A-10 Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. He averaged 12.8 points on 49.7 percent shooting (41.0 percent from three), 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in 35 starts.
Concernsย bout Avila's speed and athleticism have led to questions about his ability to succeed in the NBA, but an Exhibit-10 contract gives the Lakers a chance to evaluate his skill set during Summer League to see if they want to retain him.
The deal also gives Avila the chance to showcase his talent in front of other NBA teams that might look to add him to their roster as a potential G League player when the 2026-27 season begins.
