Magic Johnson Sounds Off on Giannis Trade, Heat's Chances vs. Knicks in NBA Title Race

Adam WellsJun 23, 2026

Magic Johnson, as only he can, sounded off on Monday's blockbuster trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat.

The Basketball Hall of Famer praised Miami's front office for getting the deal done, while expressing optimism that they can challenge the newly-crowned NBA champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference next season.

Johnson also thinks the Heat did well to get Bobby Portis in the deal to build a frontcourt with a trio of Portis, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

The Heat paid a steep price to add Antetokounmpo and Portis, giving up Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis plus a package of draft picks.

Even though the Heat have work to do filling out their depth around Antetokounmpo, it's hard not to share Johnson's enthusiasm for what they might be able to accomplish in the Eastern Conference.

A defense built around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo has the potential to be dominant. Adebayo has received votes for Defensive Player of the Year in seven consecutive seasons, and he has made the All-Defensive team six times during that same period.

Antetokounmpo finished in the top 10 of Defensive Player of the Year voting every season from 2018-19 to 2024-25, including winning the award in 2019-20.

The Heat ranked 14th in defensive rating last season, their worst finish in that category since 2014-15.

On top of the defensive impact in Miami's new-look backcourt, Antetokounmpo remains a dominant force on offense. He has averaged at least 27.0 points and 5.0 assists per game in eight consecutive seasons.

The last Heat player to average at least 27.0 points and 5.0 assists per game in a season was LeBron James in 2013-14.

When you start putting all the pieces together, Johnson's assessment that the Heat can challenge the Knicks in the East next season sounds more than plausible.
