Latest NBA Trade Rumors Update Buzz on Wizards' No. 1 Draft Pick After Trae Young Contract

Andrew PetersJun 22, 2026

After signing veteran point guard Trae Young to a new contract, the Washington Wizards reportedly still plan to use their No. 1 pick in Tuesday's NBA draft.

Per Andscape's Marc J. Spears, the Wizards "aren't engaging in trade opportunities" ahead of the draft.

After finishing 17-65 last season to miss the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year, the Wizards have suddenly turned into a team capable of making the playoffs as soon as this season.

Washington acquired Young from the Hawks in January before trading for All-Star big man Anthony Davis ahead of the deadline. Combine those two stars with a decent young core, and the Wizards could be in the mix in 2026-27.

Washington's budding roster perhaps might lead it to trading the top pick for some established talent in most drafts, but the Wizards can't pass up the opportunity to land a potentially generational player this year.

This year's class is loaded, with the top three or four players all seemingly capable of reaching All-Star status eventually. Who the Wizards will take at No. 1 is still up in the air, though.

BYU standout AJ Dybantsa has widely been viewed as the favorite to go first overall over the last few months, but Washington is reportedly still undecided.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported last week that the Wizards could "legitimately" take Kansas' Darryn Peterson over Dybantsa. The Athletic's Sam Vecenie also noted last week that "Washington continues due diligence" and "that the team is doing a lot of research into Darryn Peterson to understand everything it needs to know about him."

In his latest mock draft, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman has the Wizards taking Dybantsa at No. 1 and projects Peterson to go to the Utah Jazz with the second pick.

The Wizards' draft decision will be known in just over 24 hours, but it seems clear now that Washington has no interest in trading its top pick.
