New NBA Rumors on Wemby's Impact on 2026 Free Agency After Spurs' Loss to Knicks

Paul KasabianJun 19, 2026

The San Antonio Spurs are a "preferred destination" thanks to superstar big man Victor Wembanyama and the young team's sky-high potential, to the point where "multiple big men" are trying to find their way there this offseason, per ESPN's Michael C. Wright.

"San Antonio could use a backup stretch big as it reloads for next season, and a combo stretch big man who can start and possibly play alongside Wembanyama in bigger lineups such as Rui Hachimura, Wright wrote.

"The opportunity to play alongside Wembanyama, the franchise's success, its culture and collective youth make San Antonio a preferred destination, sources said, adding that multiple big men are already trying to get to south Texas."

The 22-year-old Wembanyama just enjoyed a successful third NBA season that saw him lead his team to 62 wins and a Western Conference title. He finished third in the NBA MVP race, and he and the Spurs should be a fixture in the championship contention picture for many years.

San Antonio's 2025-26 season ended with a five-game loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, but the future is bright in town with Wembanyama leading while flanked by talented young players such as guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

Naturally, free agents looking to play on a championship contender should want to be a part of this franchise.

As Wright noted, the door is open for the Spurs to sign a stretch big man to help Wembanyama. Wright mentioned Lakers forward Rui Hachimura, an impending free agent who just averaged 11.5 points while shooting 44.3 percent from three-point range.

He could be a good fit in town and may very well be the answer. Based on Wright's report, though, the Spurs should have numerous frontcourt options to consider as they look to take the next step and win the franchise's sixth NBA title.
