New Giannis Trade Rumors Reveal 'Issue' with Heat Offer, Potential for Celtics Contract Extension

Mike ChiariJun 16, 2026

Despite having a preference, Milwaukee Bucks superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly unsure where he will land in a potential trade this offseason.

Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press reported Monday night that although Giannis "wants to be in Miami," there is no guarantee he will, as "even [Giannis] doesn't know how this thing is going to end up."

ESPN's Brian Windhorst added that the holdup regarding a possible trade between the Bucks and the Miami Heat is related to Milwaukee not being "in love" with Miami's offers thus far, which has prompted the Bucks to have conversations with other teams.

However, Windhorst noted that the Heat have improved their offer since last season's trade deadline by offering up the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft, plus various players and prospects, including one-time All-Star guard Tyler Herro.

Giannis' interest in the Heat has long been talked about within NBA circles with Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic reporting earlier this month that Antetokounmpo was "both intrigued and impressed with the organization's winning culture."

Amick and Nehm also reported that there was another team in Giannis' radar in the form of the Boston Celtics, though.

They noted that Giannis is "very intrigued" by the Celtics due partly to his "focus on getting back to title contention," which is something Boston can potentially offer him more quickly and definitively than Miami.

Regarding the Celtics, Windhorst reported Tuesday that they are "on Antetokounmpo's list," and they would also be willing to sign Giannis to a contract extension in the event of a trade.

With Giannis' deal set to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, getting a new contract as part of a trade would conceivably be of great interest to the two-time NBA MVP.

The 2026 NBA draft is just one week away, and it may be safe to assume that the Bucks would like to get a Giannis trade done before then so they can acquire capital in this year's draft as part of the deal.

There is no question that the Heat and Celtics are the two teams that have been mentioned most often as Antetokounmpo's main suitors, but there is still no clear and obvious front-runner with the draft approaching.
