New Trae Young Trade Rumors on Potential Landing Spot After Wizards Acquired Star in Hawks Deal

Andrew PetersJun 15, 2026

Trae Young has played just five games in a Washington Wizards uniform, and that could be the extent of his time with the team.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Young is considered to be a "big fish" get for the Miami Heat if they are outbid in the race for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Fischer also noted that Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard and Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant are on the Heat's radar.

The Atlanta Hawks sent Young to Washington in January, and the two sides reportedly were expected to have extension talks soon after the trade.

Fischer noted that "the prevailing sentiment" is that Young will stay with the Wizards and sign a new long-term deal, but "there are a few teams" that have toyed with the idea of pursuing the point guard.

Young has a $49 million player option for the 2026-27 campaign, which he would need to exercise before June 23 for a trade to happen. It's worth noting that June 23 is the first day of the NBA draft, and the Bucks reportedly are expected to trade Antetokounmpo before then.

Though there wasn't a huge market for Young when the Hawks traded him in January, Fischer noted that the NBA's new flattened lottery odds could lead to a changing landscape when it comes to players like Young.

Since teams will be looking to avoid a bottom-three record, which would give them just a 5.4 percent chance to get the No. 1 pick, there is a bit of pressure to build a win-now roster rather than playing for the lottery.

Young perhaps isn't the kind of player who can will a team to a championship, but he could help a squad like, say, the Sacramento Kings or Brooklyn Nets, avoid a disastrous record that would leave them with a slim chance of coming away with the top pick.

Young, still just 27 years old, played just 15 games last year, but in his last healthy season, he put up 24.2 points and 11.6 assists per game.

While it would be tough for the Wizards to turn down a strong offer from the Heat or another team, it's not a bad idea to see what a roster featuring Young, Anthony Davis and this year's No. 1 pick can do.
