The New York Knicks winning the 2026 NBA championship is the culmination of a lengthy rebuild that began when Leon Rose was hired as team president in 2020.
BetMGM provided a timeline for how Rose "saved" the Knicks with all the moves he's made since his hiring, highlighted by signing star point guard Jalen Brunson and trading for stars OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns amid a slew of other deals:
Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, who was selected in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft, is the longest-tenured member of the team and the only holdover from the previous regime before Rose's arrival.
Marc Berman of the New York Post revealed that Rose identified Brunson as a "top target" from the moment he took over as team president in 2020. The Knicks landed him in free agency two years later and signed him to a team-friendly contract extension in 2024, which facilitated the acquisitions of Anunoby, Bridges, Towns and others.
New York won its first NBA championship since 1973 by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the Finals. Brunson was named Finals MVP after dropping 45 points in Saturday night's Game 5.
Rose will now try to keep the Knicks' core intact and improve the roster further as the team gears up to defend its title next year.
