Dylan Larkin Reportedly Requests Trade, Top NHL Landing Spots for Red Wings Captain

Julia StumbaughJun 4, 2026

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade away from his longtime team, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Thursday.

Lakin has five seasons remaining on his $8.7 million AAV contract with the Red Wings, per PuckPedia.

He would have control over his destination in a potential deal thanks to the full no-trade clause he holds over the next two seasons.

Friedman reported that one factor in Larkin's trade request is seemingly the Red Wings' lack of playoff success.

Teams potentially looking for a top-six center this offseason that also have hopes of making the postseason in the near future include the Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens.

Larkin has spent all 11 seasons of his NHL career with the Red Wings. He recorded a fifth straight 30-goal campaign last season as Detroit missed the playoffs for a 10th straight year.

The Red Wings were in a playoff spot at the end of February before going 5-7-2 in March and missing out on the playoffs.

That followed a pattern of four straight seasons in which the Red Wings have stayed in the race for a playoff spot before coallpsing over the final month of the regular season.

There are a limited number of free-agent centers set to hit the market this offseason. The Columbus Blue Jackets' Boone Jenner, Edmonton Oilers' Jason Dickinson and New York Islanders' Anders Lee headline pending free agents heading into July 1.

Should the Red Wings make Larkin available, he would immediately become the market's top center and a target for any team in need of more depth up the middle.

The Canadiens could be looking for a second-line center behind Nick Suzuki, while the Flyers could seek a forward who can bump Christian Dvorak down the lineup.

The Kings are in need of a center after the retirement of Anže Kopitar, while the Bruins still haven't landed on a long-term replacement for Patrice Bergeron.

The Wild could target a center to play alongside star winger Kirill Kaprizov next season.

Larkin's potential departure would leave the Red Wings in need of a new center of their own. Especially with winger Patrick Kane hitting free agency this summer, losing Larkin would put the Red Wings on track for an overhaul of their top six.

The Red Wings originally selected Larkin, a Michigan native, in the first round of the 2014 draft. He ranks 10th in franchise history with 276 goals in 558 regular-season games for the franchise.
