2026 NBA Draft Scouting Report for New Orleans Pelicans' No. 58 Pick Jaron Pierre Jr.

B/R NBA StaffJun 24, 2026

The New Orleans Pelicans have officially selected Jaron Pierre Jr. with the No. 58 pick in the 2026 NBA draft.

Pierre emerged as one of the ACC's most productive scorers during his lone season at SMU. The 6'5" guard averaged 17.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while serving as the focal point of the Mustangs' offense.

His ability to score from multiple levels helped elevate him into the second-round conversation.

He's also one of the rare five-year seniors, having played at Jacksonville State a year ago, Wichita State prior to that, and two years at Southern Miss to start his career.

At 6'5", 210 pounds, Pierre offers solid size for an NBA guard. Combined with his scoring instincts and offensive versatility, that profile gives him a realistic pathway to earning opportunities as a complementary scorer.

Realistic Pro Comparison: Cam Thomas

1 of 3
Milwaukee Bucks v Phoenix Suns

Like Cam Thomas, Pierre projects as a score-first guard whose value comes from shot-making and offensive aggressiveness.

Both players built their résumés around the ability to create points in a variety of situations rather than functioning as traditional facilitators.

Strengths

2 of 3
University of Notre Dame v Southern Methodist University

Strength 1: Perimeter Scoring

Pierre connected on 37.0 percent of his three-point attempts while taking a difficult shot diet. He is comfortable shooting off movement, pulling up off the dribble and knocking down catch-and-shoot opportunities. That versatility should translate well to NBA spacing.

Strength 2: Offensive Aggressiveness

Pierre embraces the responsibility of carrying an offense. He is never afraid of taking big shots and consistently pressures defenses with his scoring mentality.

Strength 3: Size for a Scoring Guard

Pierre has good size for a perimeter scorer. His frame allows him to absorb contact and create space against smaller defenders.

Weaknesses

3 of 3
2026 G League Combine

Weakness 1: At 23 years old, Pierre is older than many prospects. Teams often prefer younger players with greater developmental upside. As a result, he may need to earn opportunities through immediate offensive contributions.

Weakness 2: Pierre has the physical tools to be a capable defender, but consistency remains a question. He generated only modest defensive production and will need to prove he can hold up against NBA-level competition.

Weakness 3: Playmaking Limitations

Pierre is primarily a scorer rather than a creator for others. His 2.1 assists per game reflect a player who looks to attack first and facilitate second.
