Chwalinska Beats Kalinskaya, Updated French Open Women's Bracket at Roland-Garros
Unseeded Maja Chwaliลska's Cinderella run at the 2026 French Open continued Wednesday, as she defeated No. 22 Anna Kalinskaya 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in Paris.
The 24-year-old from Poland had never before made it past the second round at a Grand Slam, but by virtue of her upset win over Kalinskaya, she is now a French Open semifinalist.
In the semis, Chwaliลska will await the winner of the last remaining quarterfinal matchup in the women's draw between No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 25 Diana Shnaider.
The other semifinal will see No. 8 Mirra Andreeva clash with No. 15 Marta Kostyuk.
None of Chwaliลska, Shnaider, Andreeva or Kostyuk have ever won a Grand Slam singles title, making Sabalenka a heavy favorite to win the tournament as a four-time Grand Slam champion.
Playing mistake-free tennis was the name of the game for Chwaliลska during her win over Kalinskaya on Wednesday, as she committed only 15 unforced errors to Kalinskaya's 47.
Chwaliลska seized the early momentum by winning a first-set tiebreak, which put Kalinskaya on her heels:
The second set was pretty much all Chwaliลska thanks largely to the success she enjoyed against Kalinskaya's serve.
For the match, Chwaliลska held Kalinskaya to winning 51 percent of her first-serve points and just 25 percent of her second-serve points.
On top of that, Chwaliลska converted seven of the eight break points she earned, compared to five of 11 for Kalinskaya.
Chwaliลska is now in uncharted waters as far as her career is concerned, but given that four of her five wins at the French Open have come in straight sets, she may very well be the real deal with a legitimate shot to win the tournament.
