Jalen Brunson Hypes Wemby, Talks Knicks' Mindset on Video Ahead of NBA Finals vs. Spurs
Jalen Brunson, like the rest of us, is an admirer of San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama.
"Watching him as a player, it's pretty unbelievable," the New York Knicks point guard told reporters Tuesday at NBA Finals media day. "He's just able to do a lot on both sides of the ball, [things] people have never really seen before for a person of his size. It's incredible to watch, from a fan's perspective. As an opposing player, it's something you constantly have to be on watch for. You just never know the things he's capable of doing. That's why game-planning, and our game-plan discipline and our attention to detail is so important. Because he's pretty incredible."
He also said the Knicks were "focused" leading up to Wednesday's Game 1:
Wemby, 22, was spectacular in the Western Conference Finals, averaging 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.7 blocks while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 40 percent from three.
One concern for the Knicks is that one of the players who would be tasked with slowing Wemby down, Mitchell Robinson, is recovering from a pinky fracture. He was on the court for the Knicks on Tuesday, however:
As for the Knicks on the whole, the team romped through the Eastern Conference playoffs, going 12-2 while leading all playoff teams in scoring (119.9 PPG), field-goal percentage (51.5 percent), three-point shooting (40 percent) and assists (26.7 APG).
It's been impressive to watch, though the Spurs are an excellent defensive team, highlighted by Wemby's otherworldly rim protection and a host of athletic defenders on the perimeter. It will be a different challenge than New York faced against the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers or Cleveland Cavaliers.
Wemby will be a different sort of challenge, too.
"You just hope a guy like that, you can find ways to make him work," Knicks head coach Mike Brown told reporters Monday. "You pray. I had some buddies that are monks, I can't go to them because he's got that part of the religion all wrapped up."
