NBA Insiders Weigh In on 'Dream' Finals Matchup Between Wemby, Spurs and Brunson, Knicks

Julia StumbaughJun 2, 2026

At least one NBA executive feels the league landed the ideal 2026 NBA Finals matchup as Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks prepare to take on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN's Tim Bontemps.

One Western Conference executive told Bontemps: "The NBA has to be thrilled. This is a dream matchup."

The Knicks and Spurs are set to tip off Game 1 of the title series on Wednesday night in San Antonio.

Executives speaking to Bontemps said they felt the matchup provided both teams with opportunities to take advantages.

A Western Conference executive told Bontemps, "To beat San Antonio, you have to have shooting. The Knicks have that."

The Spurs shut down the Thunder in the paint, but allowed their opponents take regular shots from outside the arc during the Western Conference Finals. The defending champions made just 34 percent of those shots from deep.

Allowing that many three-point opportunities to the Knicks, who are shooting a combined 40 percent from deep during the playoffs, could be dangerous for the Spurs.

The Knicks could meanwhile have some defensive weaknesses exposed by a Spurs lineup starring other shooters who can step up even if Wembanyama is covered by players like OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson.

"How will they handle cross matches here? Brunson is great, but [Stephon] Castle and [Dylan] Harper are much bigger and stronger than him," one Western Conference assistant coach told Bontemps. "They're not easy matchups for [Brunson] to contain."

This matchup features the two highest-scoring pick-and-roll combinations of the 2026 postseason in Wembanyama and Castle as well as Brunson and Robinson, per NBA.com's John Schuhmann.

Each team's ability to limit that opposing duo will be key to determining who emerges victorious when Game 1 tips off Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Frost Bank Center.
