Every NFL Team's Biggest Position Battle and Top Potential Breakout Players
It may not feel like it, but comparatively speaking, it's still fairly early in the NFL offseason.
Yes, the bulk of free agency and the draft have both passed. However, organized team activities (OTAs) are barely underway, mandatory minicamps haven't begun, and training camps are still nearly two months away.
In other words, plenty of developments have yet to unfold.
While OTAs and minicamps don't provide a ton of information, they will provide early looks at important position battles and players who could have a surprising impact in the fall.
Here, we'll check in with every team by highlighting its most important impending position battle and top summer breakout candidates.
Arizona Cardinals
1 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Quarterback
The Arizona Cardinals parted with quarterback Kyler Murray at the beginning of the offseason. They're currently dealing with the absence of Jacoby Brissett, who is seeking a reworked contract.
If and when Brissett and the Cardinals sort things out, he'll be competing with Gardner Minshew II and rookie third-round pick Carson Beck for the starting job. Depending on how Arizona fares in the win-loss department, the winner may get to hold the starting job beyond the 2026 season.
While the Cardinals may instead look to target a quarterback in what is viewed as a talented 2027 draft pool, they'll still need a functional starter to navigate the 2026 season and accurately evaluate other talent.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Marvin Harrison Jr., Edge Walter Nolen III
If the Cardinals stumble into a quality starter at quarterback, they could see a long-awaited jump from Marvin Harrison Jr. The fourth overall pick in the 2024 draft has shown glimpses of high-level play in his two seasons but has not played at an elite level consistently.
Harrison's numbers may not be eye-popping with players like Michael Wilson, Trey McBride, and Jeremiyah Love vying for targets. However, he could still break through with quality coaching and an efficient offense.
Defensively, we should see a breakout from 2025 first-round pick Walter Nolen III. Injuries, including a season-ending meniscus tear, limited him to six games and two sacks as a rookie. The Mississippi product may be able to chase big numbers just by staying healthy.
Atlanta Falcons
2 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Quarterback
As most expected, the Atlanta Falcons parted with journeyman quarterback Kirk Cousins this offseason. However, they're not simply handing the keys to third-year man Michael Penix Jr., either.
Penix is recovering from a torn ACL and didn't play particularly well last season before the injury. He'll now have to beat out former Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa, who was added on a one-year deal in free agency.
If the Falcons can solidify their quarterback position, they'll have a chance to challenge in the NFC South. They weren't able to win the division last season, but they did tie for the division's best record.
Top Breakout Candidates: Edge Jalon Walker, RB Brian Robinson Jr.
If the Falcons do have a capable offense and are regularly able to play with a lead, it could mean big things for second-year edge-rusher Jalon Walker. The Georgia product had 5.5 sacks and five tackles for loss as a rookie.
Fellow first-round pick James Pearce Jr. could also be in store for a breakout season, though his immediate playing future is in question. Pearce faces felony charges and potential league discipline stemming from a February domestic dispute.
Offensively, we could see a bounce-back season from former Washington Commanders starting running back Brian Robinson Jr. He'll take over for Tyler Allgeier in the No. 2 role behind Bijan Robinson.
Allgeier, for the record, tallied 610 scrimmage yards and eight touchdowns last season.
Baltimore Ravens
3 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Offensive Line
The Baltimore Ravens have done some shuffling along the offensive interior this offseason. They lost star center Tyler Linderbaum and guard Daniel Faalele. They brought back former guard John Simpson, signed center Jovaughn Gwyn, signed center Danny Pinter, and drafted guard Olaivavega Ioane in the first round.
Ioane and Simpson should be in line to start but will have to fend off the likes of Andrew Vorhees and Emery Jones Jr. Gwyn and Pinter should compete with Corey Bullock at center, though the Ravens haven't ruled out the possibility of adding another veteran.
"There will be options for us, potentially terminated vets, potentially trade options," DeCosta told The Lounge podcast (h/t Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official website).
Top Breakout Candidates: S Malaki Starks, LB Teddye Buchanan
With former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter taking over as head coach, we can expect Baltimore to be better on that side of the ball. Second-year safety Malaki Starks may be one of the biggest beneficiaries. He showed promise as a rookie and should have an opportunity to become a legitimate star.
Second-year linebacker Teddye Buchanan should also have the opportunity to emerge. The fourth-round pick out of Cal started 13 games as a rookie and has firmly established himself as Roquan Smith's running mate at inside linebacker.
Buffalo Bills
4 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Cornerback
If the Buffalo Bills hoped to finally make a Super Bowl push this season, they must improve a defense that ranked 12th in points allowed in 2025. That's why the looming competition at cornerback will be critical.
Christian Benford will man one perimeter spot. 2025 first-round pick Maxwell Hairston and rookie second-round pick Davison Igbinosun should compete for the other. The loser of the battle should see playing time in subpackages, which Jim Leonhard uses frequently.
Following the trade of Taron Johnson, Dee Alford, Jordan Hancock, and Jalon Kilgore should also be in the mix for the nickel role.
Top Breakout Candidates: CB Maxwell Hairston, S Cole Bishop
Hairston suffered a sprained LCL last summer and was limited to 11 games and just three starts. The Bills, however, remain high on the Kentucky product.
"I was a huge fan of Max coming out of college," Leonhard said, per Pat Pickens of Heavy. "We're not down on any of the corners we have."
If Hairston wins the job and stays healthy, he'll have a real shot at a breakthrough campaign. So will safety Cole Bishop, who is already on the rise after leading Buffalo in both tackles and interceptions last season.
Carolina Panthers
5 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Left Tackle
The Carolina Panthers won the NFC South last season, and they came incredibly close to knocking off the Los Angeles Rams in the wild-card round. However, Carolina also lost starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu to a torn Patellar tendon during that final loss.
With the timeline for Ekwonu's return uncertain, the Panthers added both Rasheed Walker and rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling this offseason.
Freeling has immense long-term potential, possibly as a right tackle, a role currently filled by 31-year-old Taylor Moton. However, he's a raw prospect who may not truly challenge the more experienced Walker. Still, the Panthers must go with whoever gives them the best chance to succeed without Ekwonu.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Jalen Coker, Edge Nic Scourton
If Carolina's line holds up, it could help lead to big things for third-year receiver Jalen Coker. The 2024 undrafted free agent began last season on injured reserve with a quad injury. While he was limited to 11 games, he still finished second on the team with 394 receiving yards.
Coker led the Panthers with 134 yards during their wild-card appearance. If he can maintain a starting role in camp and stay healthy throughout the year, he should be in store for his most productive season yet.
Fans should also continue tracking second-year edge-rusher Nic Scourton. As a rookie, Scourton tied for the team lead with five sacks. The arrival of free agent Jaelan Phillips should give Scourton a legitimate bookend complement, and it should be fun to see how the pair grows during the summer.
Chicago Bears
6 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Left Tackle
Quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears had their breakouts in 2025, under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. They'll have an opportunity to replicate their success, but protecting Williams will be a top priority.
Unfortunately, starting left tackle Ozzy Trapilo suffered a ruptured patellar tendon during the playoffs, which could keep him out for much or all of 2026.
"Not sure if we'll have him next year or at what point he'll come up," Johnson said in April, per ESPN's Courtney Cronin.
With Trapilo out of the picture for the time being, Braxton Jones, Theo Benedet, and newcomer Jedrick Wills Jr. represent Chicago's top options at left tackle.
Top Breakout Candidates: RB Kyle Monangai, WR Luther Burden III
If Chicago finds a stable O-line combination, second-year players Kyle Monangai and Luther Burden III could both be on the verge of breaking out.
Burden showed a ton of promise down the stretch last season, overcoming a slow start to finish with 652 yards and two touchdowns. Following the D.J. Moore trade, Burden should be entrenched as the Bears' No. 2 target opposite Rome Odunze.
Monangai, meanwhile, recorded 947 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns while largely working behind D'Andre Swift. With Swift entering a contract year, it wouldn't be a shock to see Monangai take over as the lead back and Chicago's long-term starter at some point in 2026.
Cincinnati Bengals
7 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Edge-Rusher
The Cincinnati Bengals improved their defensive interior by signing Jonathan Allen and trading for Dexter Lawrence. However, their edge rotation took a significant hit when Trey Hendrickson departed for the rival Ravens in free agency.
While the Bengals don't have a proven top sack artist on their roster, the proverbial cupboard isn't completely bare.
2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy finally started to show growth this past season, which he finished with 5.5 sacks. 2025 first-round pick Shemar Stewart did little as a rookie but still has a high ceiling. Those two should be pushed by free-agent addition Boye Mafe and rookie second-round pick Cashius Howell in camp.
Top Breakout Candidates: Edge Myles Murphy, LB Demetrius Knight Jr.
Murphy led the Bengals in sacks last season, and he added six tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, and three passes defended. With Lawrence and Allen in the middle, he could see much more impressive numbersโassuming he wins one of the starting jobs.
Second-year linebacker Demetrius Knight can be inked in as a starter following a promising rookie campaign. The second-round pick out of South Carolina started 14 games last season and finished with 106 tackles, three sacks, and seven passes defended.
Assuming Cincinnati's big offseason swings lead to an improved overall defense, young players like Murphy and Knight should see their numbers improve along with their national profiles.
Cleveland Browns
8 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Quarterback
The Cleveland Browns stumbled to a 5-12 record last season despite having the league's fourth-ranked defense. It's not hard to imagine Cleveland becoming a surprise playoff team with some offensive potency and competent quarterback play.
Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green are currently in Cleveland's quarterback room. While there's no guarantee that any one of them will provide the QB stability Cleveland has long lacked, fans can hope.
Watson was a Pro Bowler with the Houston Texans but has looked borderline lost in Cleveland when healthy. He'll have one last chance to regain his previous form under new head coach Todd Monken this season, but he'll first have to fend off Sanders and Co. through training camp.
Top Breakout Candidates: TE Harold Fannin Jr., Edge Alex Wright
The prospect of respectable quarterback play is one reason to believe in tight end Harold Fannin Jr. The other is the offseason departure of longtime starter David Njoku.
While Njoku was limited to 12 games last season, he started 11 of those. Fanning still managed to rack up 731 receiving yards and six touchdowns. As the top pass-catching tight end in Cleveland, he could have truly impressive numbers.
Defensively, fans should track fifth-year edge-defender Alex Wright.
Wright had a mini breakout last season, recording 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss while playing opposite record-setter Myles Garrett. With offenses gearing up even more to slow Garrett, Wright could see another leap in productionโespecially if the Browns offense can avoid being an embarrassment.
Dallas Cowboys
9 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Edge-Rusher
The Dallas Cowboys have been looking to rebuild their pass-rushing rotation ever since they traded away Micah Parsons late last offseason. This offseason alone, they've traded for Rashan Gary and drafted Malachi Lawrence in the first round.
The new additions will compete with returning players like Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston, and Sam Williams for roles at the forefront of the rotation. While none of them are likely to replace Parsons on a one-for-one basis, a successful competition should yield a productive pass rush.
Dallas recorded just 34 sacks as a team in 2025 while ranking dead-last in points allowed.
Top Breakout Candidates: Edge Donovan Ezeiruaku, WR Ryan Flournoy
While the additions of Gary and Lawrence have generated plenty of buzz, fans shouldn't be surprised if Ezeiruaku is the one creating excitement during the regular season.
The 2025 second-round pick out of Boston College logged just two sacks as a rookie, but he recorded an impressive 26 quarterback pressures. If he can finish just a bit more consistently, he should quickly become a rising star.
Third-year receiver Ryan Flournoy probably won't become a true star as long as CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens are both healthy and on the field. However, the Southwest Missouri State product took a big step forward in his sophomore campaign, finishing third among Cowboys receivers with 475 yards and four touchdowns.
Flournoy could be in store for another jump in Year 3.
Denver Broncos
10 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
The Denver Broncos might have advanced to Super Bowl LX if quarterback Bo Nix hadn't suffered a fractured ankle during the team's divisional win over Buffalo.
With Nix Healthy, the Broncos should be able to make another strong run in 2026. However, they'll need to sort through an intriguing receiver competition to five Nix his best possible supporting cast.
Denver made a bold trade to acquire Jaylen Waddle before the draft, and he should fill the No. 1 receiver role. Courtland Sutton should hold the No. 2 spot, but he'll be competing with Troy Franklin, Lil'Jordan Humphrey, Marvin Mims Jr., Pat Bryant, and others for reps.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Troy Franklin, RB RJ Harvey
Sutton is signed through 2029, but he's also set to turn 31 in October and could be a potential cap casualty next offseasonโDenver could save $20 million in 2027 cap space by releasing him with a post-June 1 designation.
The Broncos very well may give Franklin the chance to take over the No. 2 role this season, and if that happens, he could see a sizeable jump in production. Franklin took positive steps in 2025, and his chemistry with Nix goes back to their time together at Oregon.
RJ Harvey could also be in store for a breakout campaign. While Denver re-signed J.K. Dobbins and drafted Jonah Coleman in Round 4, Harvey has a ceiling that can't be ignored.
Despite starting only seven games as a rookie, Harvey tallied 896 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns. A bigger role could have him in line for Pro Bowl numbers.
Detroit Lions
11 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Edge-Rusher
The Detroit Lions' search for a No. 2 edge-rusher continues. Aidan Hutchinson has been a star pretty much since he was drafted in 2022, but the Lions have struggled to find a consistent complement opposite him over the last four years.
This offseason, Detroit threw multiple darts at its edge rotation. It added D.J. Wonnum and Peyton Turner before using a second-round pick on Michigan's Derrick Moore.
Ideally, the Lions will find a starter or combination of players capable of replicating what they had in 2025. Al-Quadin Muhammad recorded 11 sacks but then bolted for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.
Top Breakout Candidates: DL Tyleik Williams, WR Isaac TeSlaa
2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams flashed promise as a rookie but probably didn't wow anyone statistically. He recorded 18 combined tackles and a sack while playing 40 percent of the defensive snaps.
Williams should be in store for a more prominent role following the departure of D.J. Reader in free agency. As an interior defender, he may still not deliver gaudy numbers. However, Williams' production should more closely match his draft status in Year 2.
Isaac TeSlaa is another second-year player poised for a jump. Following the departure of Kalif Raymond, he should take over as Detroit's WR3 behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
Green Bay Packers
12 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Cornerback
The Green Bay Packers' looming cornerback battle will be big for a couple of reasons. For one, the Packers are adapting to a new defense under new coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
Secondly, Green Bay's cornerback group left a bit to be desired last season. Keisean Nixon, for example, allowed an opposing passer rating of 105.1 in coverage. Carrington Valentine allowed an opposing passer rating of 121.2.
Nickel corner Javon Bullard was marginally better, allowing an opposing passer rating of 98.3.
This offseason, things should be wide open at cornerback for the Packers, who added Benjamin St-Juste before drafting Brandon Cisse in Round 2 and Domani Jackson in Round 6.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Matthew Golden, LT Jordan Morgan
Offensively, the Packers will be hoping to see a pair of former first-round picks break out in 2026โand if they don't, there will be problems.
Last year's first-round selection, Matthew Golden, battled multiple injuries as a rookie and finished with just 361 receiving yards. He should have better numbers this season, based on opportunity alone. Green Bay lost Romeo Doubs in free agency and traded Dontayvion Wicks.
2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan, meanwhile, will finally have a chance to establish himself as a starting left tackle. He played multiple positions along the line in 2025 but lost the left-tackle job to Rasheed Walker, who is now in Carolina.
Houston Texans
13 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Offensive Line
The Houston Texans are hoping that quarterback C.J. Stroud can return to the Pro Bowl form he showed as a rookie three years ago. Having an improved offensive line will, at least, allow Houston to accurately gauge Stroud in 2026.
The Texans have consistently tinkered with their offensive line over the past two years, and they should have a couple of battles this offseason. Free-agent additions Wyatt Teller and Evan Brown should compete at left guard, while Jake Andrews and Keylan Rutledge compete at center.
Braden Smith was added to start at right tackle, though he'll have to hold off returning tackle Trent Brown.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Jayden Higgins, RB Woody Marks
If Stroud does return to form this season, it should aid a pair of second-year contributors.
Jayden Higgins was Houston's top draft selection in 2025, and he went on to rank second among Texans receivers, behind Nico Collins, with 525 receiving yards. He would benefit greatly from a Stroud resurgence.
Running back Woody Marks, meanwhile, established himself as a capable dual-threat back as a rookie, though he may be more efficient in a change-of-pace role. With David Montgomery now on the roster, Marks finds himself with a starting-caliber running mate.
Indianapolis Colts
14 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
Once fully recovered from his torn Achilles, Daniel Jones will be the Indianapolis Colts' starting quarterback. That much is certain. What's less certain is just how his receiving corps will look.
Indy established Alec Pierce as its top target when it signed him to a four-year, $114 million deal in free agency. The second and third receiver roles, however, are less defined.
The Colts traded away Michael Pittman Jr. while adding Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and rookie Deion Burks. They'll compete with receivers like Josh Downs, Ashton Dulin, and Anthony Gould for starting roles.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Josh Downs, Edge Laiatu Latu
With Pittman out, it won't be a surprise to see Downs produce more prolific numbers in his fourth season. The Colts' top slot option topped 700 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons but had just 566 receiving yards in 2025.
If Jones stays healthy and stabilizes the Colts' quarterback position, Downs will have a very real chance to exceed his 2023 and 2024 numbers.
Third-year edge-rusher Laiatu Latu, meanwhile, should have a chance to firmly establish himself as a star. The 2024 first-round pick more than doubled his rookie sack total (4.0) in 2025 (8.5), and he could see another significant jump in 2026โespecially if Indy's offense regularly allows its defense to play with a lead.
Jacksonville Jaguars
15 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Running Back
The Jacksonville Jaguars surged in 2025, due in large part to the arrival of head coach Liam Coen and a breakthrough by quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, we shouldn't ignore the contributions of running back Travis Etienne Jr., who finished with 1,399 scrimmage yards and 13 touchdowns.
Etienne joined the New Orleans Saints in free agency, leaving Jacksonville with a sizeable backfield hole.
The Jags didn't add much to the running back position this offseason, signing Chris Rodriguez Jr., Ameer Abdullah, and undrafted free agent J'Mari Taylor. In the coming weeks, they'll compete with Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen Jr. for spots in the backfield rotation.
Top Breakout Candidates: RB Bhayshul Tuten, CB/WR Travis Hunter
Though the Jaguars will likely utilize a committee backfield, 2025 fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten may have the inside track to the starting job. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry as a rookie but averaged 5.7 yards per rush at Virginia Tech and possesses 4.32 speed.
Tuten's big-play ability was on display during Jacksonville's loss in the wild-card roundโhe ran for 51 yards on just four carries. He'll have many more opportunities with Etienne out, and if Tuten can find yards with more consistency, he should be an emerging star.
Second-year cornerback and receiver Travis Hunter may also cement his star status this season. Jacksonville traded up to take the two-way player second overall, but he had a largely forgettable rookie season before suffering a season-ending torn LCL.
General manager James Gladstone revealed in April that Hunter should be healthy by training camp. It'll be interesting to see how he's used and what strides he can make ahead of Year 2.
Kansas City Chiefs
16 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is working his way back from a torn ACL, but it's looking increasingly likely that he'll be ready to go within the first few weeks of the regular season.
"He's way ahead of schedule," GM Brett Veach told SiriusXM Radio in early May (h/t NFL.com's Kevin Patra).
While Mahomes' recovery timeline is still somewhat uncertain, things are even murkier at wide receiver. Rashee Rice was practically Kansas City's only dependable wideout in 2025, and he's recovering from knee surgery while serving a 30-day jail term tied to a probation violation.
Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, Jalen Royals, Nikko Remigio, and rookie Cyrus Allen will all be competing for roles in camp, and the Chiefs may look to add more to the position.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Tyquan Thornton, CB Nohl Williams
While Thornton wasn't particularly reliable in 2025, he showed a tremendous ceiling as a deep threat. He caught just 19 of 37 targets but averaged an impressive 23.1 yards per reception.
A 2022 second-round pick of the New England Patriots, Thornton spent part of 2024 on Kansas City's practice squad. He first got on the field with the Chiefs in 2025 and immediately had a career-best campaign. Don't be shocked if Year 3 brings another jump.
Fans should also expect a jump from cornerback Nohl Williams. The 2025 third-round pick showed promise as a rookie, allowing an opposing passer rating of 82.9 across 17 games with five starts. He's looking at an expanded role now that Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie are out.
Las Vegas Raiders
17 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Quarterback
The Las Vegas Raiders added veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins shortly before the draft, so they shouldn't be inclined to rush No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza onto the field. However, you can bet all eyes will be on the two quarterbacks all summer.
Mendoza is the reigning Heisman winner and just let Indiana to an undefeated season and a national championship. He has all the tools and intangibles needed to solve Las Vegas' quarterback situation for the foreseeable future.
Cousins is a former Pro Bowler and the sort of steady hand who can help ensure Las Vegas is competitive while Mendoza develops. Seeing the two side-by-side in camp will give the Raiders a good idea of whether Mendoza's time will come early or at all in 2026โor if he's advancing quickly enough to relegate Cousins to backup duties all season.
Top Breakout Candidates: RB Ashton Jeanty, WR Tre Tucker
Regardless of which quarterback starts in Week 1, the Raiders should have a much more dependable quarterback situation than they had in 2025. They should also have an improved offensive line following the additions of Tyler Linderbaum and Spencer Burford.
Having a better overall offense should lead running back Ashton Jeanty right toward a second-year breakout. The 2025 first-round pick had bright moments as a rookie, but struggled to find easy yards behind one of the league's worst offensive lines.
Wideout Tre Tucker, who recorded a team-high 696 receiving yards last season, should also see a statistical jump. He projects as Las Vegas' top perimeter target, and the Raiders should finally have a quarterback capable of getting him the ball consistently.
Los Angeles Chargers
18 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Guard
The Los Angeles Chargers' offensive line was a significant weakness in 2025, due largely to injuries. Tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt both suffered season-ending injuries but should he healthy heading into this year's camp.
Having Slater and Alt back will be huge, and Tyler Biadasz should solidify things at center. However, L.A. still has some questions at guard. Fortunately, it also put some capital into addressing the position.
Trevor Penning is back, and the Chargers signed Cole Strange and Kayode Awosika before drafting Jake Slaughter, Logan Taylor, and ย Alex Harke. If the competition at guard yields two capable starters, Los Angeles should have one of the better overall lines in the NFL this season.
Top Breakout Candidates: G Cole Strange, RB Omarion Hampton
Strange may have the inside track at one of the starting guard spots, and he could have a breakout campaign if he does. A 2022 first-round pick out of Chattanooga, Strange didn't exactly perform up to his draft status early in his career. However, he spent last season playing for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and will bring system familiarity to Los Angeles.
Playing between Biadasz and one of the Chargers' standout tackles, Strange may finally start to realize his NFL potential.
The Chargers should also expect big things from second-year running back Omarion Hampton. The 2025 first-round pick flashed plenty of upside as a rookie but also missed time with a fractured ankle.
If healthy and playing behind an improved O-line, Hampton could be headed toward stardom.
Los Angeles Rams
19 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
The Los Angeles Rams have few glaring roster holes, especially after adding cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. However, L..A. could still use a dependable third receiver behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, which is why it reportedly came close to trading for A.J. Brown earlier in the offseason.
Brown isn't joining the Rams as WR3, so the summer's receiver competition will be critical.
Xavier Smith ranked third among Rams receivers with 303 receiving yards last season. He should compete with Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield, and rookie CJ Daniels for this year's No. 3 role.
Top Breakout Candidates: TE Terrance Ferguson, RB Blake Corum
After addingย Max Klare in the second round, the Rams are accumulating a logjam at tight end. Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson, and Davis Allen are back, as is 2025 second-round pick Terrance Ferguson.
Truth be told, and one of L.A.'s tight ends could become Matthew Stafford's top target at the positionโHigbee, Parkinson, Allen, and Ferguson all topped 200 yards in 2025. However, fans should keep an eye on Ferguson, who combines a 6'5" frame with 4.63 speed and who could have a big sophomore campaign.
Blake Corum made a significant jump during his sophomore campaign last year, and he could make another one in 2026. Kyren Williams is still the starter, but the Rams should be willing to put a little more on Corum's plate in Year 3.
Miami Dolphins
20 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
The Miami Dolphins signed quarterback Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million deal in free agency, despite the fact that he has made just six career starts.
Ideally, the 27-year-old will build on his limited but promising resume and establish himself as Miami's long-term answer at quarterback. For that to happen, though, the Dolphins will have to field a functional receiving corps. The competition at receiver this summer should be fierce.
Miami parted with both Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill this offseason but added Jalen Tolbert, Tutu Atwell, Tarrace Marshall Jr., Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell, and Kevin Coleman Jr. to the receiver room.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Malik Washington, Edge Chop Robinson
Malik Washington is Miami's most notable holdover receiver, and he could be in store for a breakout if Willis establishes himself early.
Washington, a 2024 sixth-round pick out of Virginia, appeared in all 17 games with six starts this past season. He only produced 317 receiving yards, but that ranked fourth on the team and second among wide receivers.
Third-year edge-rusher Chop Robinson should also have a shot at a breakout. He'll have a new system under new head coach Jeff Hafley, and he should be at the front of Miami's edge-rushing rotation. The Dolphins traded Jaelan Phillips last season and parted with Bradley Chubb at the start of the offseason.
Minnesota Vikings
21 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Quarterback
The Minnesota Vikings won 14 games with former draft bust Sam Darnold at quarterback two years ago. They turned to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy this past season and stumbled to a 9-8 record.
Darnold, meanwhile, helped lead the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory.
The Vikings are hoping that improved quarterback play can lead them back to the success they had in 2024. McCarthy will have a chance to rebound from a disappointing 2025 campaign, but he'll have to beat out former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, who was added on a one-year deal in free agency.
Top Breakout Candidates: S Jay Ward, Edge Dallas Turner
While all eyes will be on Minnesota's offense, we could see a pair of defenders break out in 2026โespecially if the offense keeps up its end of the bargain.
Safety Jay Ward emerged as an important contributor last season, finishing with 27 tackles and a fumble recovery while playing 23 percent of the defensive snaps. With Harrison Smith still unsignedโand possibly weighing retirementโWard could be walking into a starting opportunity.
Edge-rusher Dallas Turner, meanwhile, should build off an impressive sophomore campaign. He went from three sacks in 2024 to eight last season and could make another jump following the trade of fellow edge-defender Jonathan Greenard.
New England Patriots
22 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Offensive Line
Emerging star quarterback Drake Maye led the New England Patriots to Super Bowl LX before crumbling beneath an aggressive pass rush. The Patriots will hope to avoid a similar situation in 2026 by improving their offensive line.
Position battles are likely to take place all along New England's line. 2025 first-round pick Will Campbell started at left tackle as a rookie but may have to fend off rookie first-round pick Caleb Lomu. If he does, Lomu and rookie sixth-rounderย Dametrious Crownover may push Morgan Moses at right tackle.
Jared Wilson was a rookie starter at guard last season but is transitioning to center, the position he played at Georgia. Free-agent addition Alijah Vera-Tucker should be in line to replace Wilson at left guard, though he may have to hold off players like Caedan Wallace and Mehki Butler.
Top Breakout Candidates: C Jared Wilson, WR Kyle Williams
Though he still has to earn the job, Wilson is thrilled about the opportunity to move back to his natural position.
"Very excited. I'll keep it at that," Wilson said, per Conor Ryan of Boston.com.
If Wilson's move is successful, he could be in line for a big jump in his second season. Second-year receiver Kyle Williams could find himself in a very similar position.
The 2025 third-round pick had a modest 209 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. However, he could see an expanded role as a perimeter threat in Year 2, especially if the Patriots don't end up acquiring A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles.
NFL insider Josina Anderson reported last week that the two sides have "grappled" over the trade compensation of a Brown trade.
New Orleans Saints

Most Important Position Battle: Defensive Back
The Saints ranked sixth in net yards per pass attempt allowed last season, but that doesn't mean that their secondary is set. Alontae Taylor departed in free agency, and New Orleans is still looking for a perimeter starter opposite Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Quincy Riley, Isaac Yiadom, and recent addition Martin Emerson Jr. should all be in the mix for the CB2 role. Multiple cornerbacks and safeties could be in line to replace Taylor in the slot.
Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has used a variety of players in the nickel role in the past. Emerson, Yiadom, and Riley could be in the mix, along with safeties Julian Blackmon and Jonas Sanker.
Top Breakout Candidates: QB Tyler Shough, OT Kelvin Banks Jr.
Tyler Shough looked the part of a future franchise quarterback down the stretch of his rookie season. He'll have the opportunity to blossom into a star in Year 2, thanks in large part to an improved supporting cast.
New Orleans added David Edwards to help boost the offensive line, signed Travis Etienne Jr. to lead the backfield, and used a first-round pick on Jordyn Tyson to strengthen the receiving corps.
Second-year tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. will also get to build off a solid rookie season. He started all 17 games last season and was ranked 29th overall among tackles by Pro Football Focus. Another strong seasonโand a successful Saints seasonโshould thrust Banks into the national spotlight.
New York Giants

Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
With head coach John Harbaugh now in the mix, the New York Giants are expecting big things from second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart. Having a proven coach like Harbaugh will certainly help, but Dart will need a functional receiving corps, too.
Unfortunately, star receiver Malik Nabers is recovering from a torn ACL, and the Giants lost Wan'Dale Robinson in free agency. Nabers will eventually be back in the lineup. However, it's unclear when or if he'll be back on the field and at 100 percent this season.
In camp, Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, Jaylin Hyatt, Calvin Austin III, Darnell Mooney, and rookie Malachi Fields will compete for rolesโboth to help fill in for Nabers and to complement him once he returns.
Top Breakout Candidates: QB Jaxson Dart, Edge Abdul Carter
If the Giants do have a capable receiving corps, they should expect Dart to make a second-year jump. Of course, he'll have to stay healthy throughout the season for it to actually happen.
Dart showed a high ceiling as a rookie (91.7 passer rating), but he also showcased a risky play style that led to missed time due to a concussion. One of Harbaugh's first tasks should involve convincing Dart to play smarter.
New York's other 2025 first-round pick, Abdul Carter, should also see a jump. He had just four sacks as a rookie but recorded an impressive 34 quarterback pressures. With an improved roster and improved coaching, Carter should finish more frequently as a pass-rusher.
New York Jets
25 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Cornerback
Armed with three 2027 first-round picks, the New York Jets appear to be setting the table for a quarterback to be drafted a year from now. One of those selectionsโalong with a 2026 first-rounderโwas acquired in last year's Sauce Gardner.
Trading Gardner was a bold move to add capital, but now the Jets face the task of replacing at least one high-level starter in the secondary.
Brandon Stephens, who started 16 games in 2026, will likely hold down one perimeter spot. Azareye'h Thomas, free-agent addition Nahshon Wright, and rookie second-round pickย D'Angelo Ponds should be the top candidates to play on the other slide and in the slot.
Top Breakout Candidates: CB Azareye'h Thomas, TE Mason Taylor
Thomas, a 2025 third-round pick, may have a tough time holding on to a prominent role with Wright and Ponds in the mix. However, he showed a lot of promise as a rookie, allowing an opposing passer rating of 83.9 in coverage.
If Thomas can win a starting job in camp and build on what he accomplished last season, he could become one of the brighter spots on New York's defense.
Offensively, we may see a breakout campaign from 2025 second-round pick Mason Taylor. He'll likely split time with rookie first-rounder Kenyon Sadiq at tight end. If Geno Smith provides some stability at quarterback, though, Taylor should compile far more than the 369 receiving yards he had as a rookie.
Philadelphia Eagles
26 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Edge-Rusher
Plenty of eyes will be on the Eagles' receiver competition, assuming Philly does trade A.J. Brown. However, the competition at edge-rusher might be even more critical.
The Eagles struggled to consistently generate pressure off the edge in 2025, and while they added Jaelan Phillips at the trade deadline, they also lost him in free agency.
This offseason, Philadelphia signed Arnold Ebiketie, traded for Jonathan Greenard, and drafted Keyshawn James-Newby. Greenard should walk into a starting job, but the others will compete with Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt for prominent roles in the rotation.
Top Breakout Candidates: Edge Jalyx Hunt, LB Jihaad Campbell
Hunt led the Eagles with 6.5 sacks last season, and he added nine tackles for loss and 29 quarterback pressures. 2025 brought a big jump for the 2024 third-round pick, and 2026 could bring an even bigger one.
Greenard had just three sacks in 2025. However, if he returns to Pro Bowl form, he should help free up Hunt to attack one-on-one matchups and rack up even bigger numbers than he had last year.
Hunt may become a bona fide star this season, as could second-year linebacker Jihaad Campbell. The 2025 first-round pick started the first eight games of his rookie season while Nakobe Dean recovered from a torn Patellar tendon suffered in 2024.
With Dean now in Las Vegas, Campbell should be right back in a starting role.
Pittsburgh Steelers
27 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Offensive Line
Aaron Rodgers will have one last ride with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and protecting the 42-year-old should be a top priority. Pittsburgh's offensive line competition will be a massive part of the process.
With Broderick Jones still recovering from a neck injury, Pittsburgh's line could look quite different this season. Former right guard Mason McCormick and former right tackle Troy Fautanu are likely moving to the left side this year, leaving openings in their former positions.
Center Zach Frazier should maintain his role. However, rookie first-round pick ย Max Iheanachor should compete with Dylan Cook at right tackle, while rookie third-round pick Gennings Dunker battles Spencer Anderson at right guard.
Top Breakout Candidates: C Zach Frazier, TE Darnell Washington
Frazier has become the constant in Pittsburgh's offensive line, and he could be on the brink of stardom. He has started 31 games over the past two seasons and was graded as the league's eighth-best center by Pro Football Focus last year.
If the Steelers' O-line comes together in camp and becomes one of the league's better units, Frazier should make a push for his first career Pro Bowl nod.
Fourth-year tight end Darnell Washington won't earn Pro Bowl consideration, but he could see another significant jump after setting career highs in receptions (31) and receiving yards (364) last season. While the Steelers did draft Riley Nowakowski in the fifth round, they also released Jonnu Smith early in the offseason.
Fans should get their first good look at Washington in Mike McCarthy's offense in camp.
San Francisco 49ers
28 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
With Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne both gone, and Brandon Aiyuk's future still in limbo, the San Francisco 49ers should put a lot of focus into their wide receiver competition this offseason.
A year ago, Christian McCaffrey was San Francisco's leading receiver, while Jennings led 49ers wideouts with just 643 yards.
Free-agent addition Mike Evans is the headliner of the new-look receiver group, but he'll turn 33 in August and may not be the top target he once was. San Francisco also signed Christian Kirk before using an early second-round pick on Mississippi's De'Zhaun Stribling.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Ricky Pearsall, DE Mykel Williams
While the 49ers have plenty of new faces in the receiver room, 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall is returning for his third season. If he continues building on his sophomore campaign, it could be a big one.
Pearsall missed part of his rookie year after being shot in an attempted robbery. He was limited to nine games last season by hamstring and PCL injuries but still recorded 528 receiving yards, making him San Francisco's most productive returning wideout.
2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams suffered a torn ACL in November but was healthy enough to make an appearance at 49ers rookie camp. If he's back to 100 percent by training camp, he could be looking at his own breakthrough campaign.
Seattle Seahawks
29 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Running Back
Rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price should have the inside track at the Seattle Seahawks' running back job. However, sorting through a backfield rotation that may include Price, George Holani, and free-agent addition Emanuel Wilson will be a big part of Seattle's summer.
Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III departed in free agency, and Zach Charbonnet is recovering from a torn ACL and underwent surgery in late February.
There's a very real chance that Charbonnet won't be available until late in the season. Therefore, getting Price up to speed and figuring out who can help share the load will be a priority.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Rashid Shaheed, S Ty Okada
To be clear, Rashid Shaheed earned plenty of time in the spotlight after being acquired from the Saints at the trade deadline. He had two touchdowns as a return specialist for Seattle in the regular season and another in the playoffs. However, he added just 266 receiving yards in 12 games, including the postseason.
With a full offseason in Seattle, Shaheed should have a chance to establish himself as a regular offensive contributor, possibly the second option behind Jaxson Smith-Njigba. Shaheed's best receiving season to this point was a 719-yard campaign in 2023. With a strong camp and a starting role, he could top that number in 2026.
Fans should also keep an eye on safety Ty Okada. The 2023 undrafted free agent was a regular contributor last season and should see an even bigger role following the departure of Coby Bryant in free agency.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
30 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Wide Receiver
For the last 12 years, wide receiver Mike Evans has been a mainstay of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense. This offseason, Tampa faces the difficult task of replacing the six-time Pro Bowler, who departed for San Francisco in free agency.
"Anytime you lose a player like [Evans], or any veteran player that was legendary on their team, different guys got to come in and step up," head coach Todd Bowles said, per JoeBucsFan.com. "And that's the nature of sports."
The Bucs will have several receivers competing to replace Evans' production. The list includes returning receivers Chris Godwin Jr., Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and Tez Johnson, along with rookie third-round pickย Ted Hurst.
Finding the right starting combination will be critical, as the Buccaneers look to get Baker Mayfield back on a Pro Bowl track.
Top Breakout Candidates: WR Emeka Egbuka, CB Benjamin Morrison
Egbuka should have the best opportunity to replace Evans on a one-for-one basis. The 2025 first-round pick showed a ton of promise early last season before leveling off and finishing with 938 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
If Egbuka can build off his rookie campaign and maintain consistency, he should be in store for a big year. The same can be said for second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison.
Fellow rookie Jacob Parrish appeared in all 17 games last season, primarily as a nickel corner, but Morrison was limited to 10 games and was eased onto the fieldโhe suffered a hip injury that required surgery in his final college season. Now healthy, Morrison should be ready to take over for the departed Jamel Dean as a regular starter.
Tennessee Titans
31 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Offensive Line
Protecting and developing second-year quarterback Cam Ward should be the Tennessee Titans' biggest goal in 2026. Improving an offensive line that allowed 56 sacks last season should be a huge part of the equation.
Tennessee didn't make wholesale changes to its line, but it should hold competitions at center and right guard. Jackson Slater and free-agent addition Cordell Volson should compete for the latter position, while Austin Schlottmann and rookieย Pat Coogan should compete for the former.
And if the Titans can find someone to challenge left tackle Dan Moore Jr.โwho was ranked 62nd among all tackles by Pro Football Focus last seasonโall the better.
Top Breakout Candidates: QB Cam Ward, TE Gunnar Helm
Ward is one of the most obvious breakout candidates in the NFL this season. He showed flashes as a rookie, and he should show solid improvement following the additions of receivers Wan'Dale Robinson andย Carnell Tate. Naturally, an improved offensive line would also help tremendously.
Expect Ward to show tangible growth as early as minicamp.
Tight end Gunnar Helm could be a rising star alongside Ward. The 2025 fourth-round pick should step into a prominent role following the departure of 2025 Titans receiving leader Chigoziem Okonkwo.
Washington Commanders
32 of 32.jpg)
Most Important Position Battle: Edge-Rusher
The Washington Commanders' defense recorded a respectable 42 sacks in 2025, but Von Miller and Jacob Martin combined for 14.5 of those sacks, and neither is currently with the team.
Washington has reloaded its edge-rushing rotation by adding the likes of Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, and rookie Joshua Josephs to a group that retained Dorance Armstrong and Drake Jackson.
Finding the right edge will be a big step in improving a defense that ranked dead-last overall last season.
Top Breakout Candidates: TE Chigoziem Okonwko, CB Trey Amos
Washington's addition of tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo didn't generate a ton of attention this offseason, but it probably should have. Okonkwo was a terrific pass-catching tight end (2,017 yards in four seasons) who regularly flew under the radar in Tennessee.
If quarterback Jayden Daniels can stay healthy and return to Pro Bowl form this season, he should help Okonkwo become a legitimate star.
As far as returning talent goes, fans should keep an eye on 2025 second-round pick Trey Amos. A fractured fibula limited the Mississippi product to 10 games last season, but he should have the opportunity to cement himself as a defensive centerpiece as a sophomore.
