Venus Williams Withdraws from Roland-Garros 'and No Reason Was Given'
Venus Williams will not participate in the women's doubles competition at Roland-Garros.
The Associated Press reported Williams and playing partner Hailey Baptiste withdrew Thursday and that "no reason was given by organizers." Notably, though, Baptiste retired during her second-round singles match against Wang Xiyu after she landed awkwardly on her left leg.
While Williams will turn 46 years old next month and is no longer at the peak of her career, she is a tennis icon.
Her resume includes 49 singles titles and 22 doubles titles, and she reached the No. 1 ranking in both disciplines. She also became the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles main draw earlier this year.
Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion with five of those titles coming at Wimbledon and two of them coming at the U.S. Open. She reached the final of the Australian Open twice and Roland-Garros once.
That Roland-Garros final appearance came in 2002, but she lost to her sister Serena with the title on the line.
The Williams sisters won the doubles competition at Roland-Garros twice together, though, with their triumphs coming in 1999 and 2010.
Despite her illustrious list of accomplishments, Venus Williams is 0-7 in singles matches this year and last played at the Madrid Open.
As for this year's Roland-Garros competition, she and Baptiste were replaced by Eudice Chong and Veronika Rejvec in the women's doubles draw after withdrawing from the tournament.
